May irritate: you can try rinsing with the Colgate mouthwash and see if it irritates your ulcer. I'd advise using Rincinol by Butler Gum to help sooth the ulcer which should normally take a little over a week to resolve. If that doesn't help your Dentist can prescribe a special mouthwash to alleviate the discomfort. If it is still persistent have your dentist examine it. Hope you feel better. ...Read more

Your choice: Rinse or not? This depends on what rinse you use. If it is for cavity prevention and the rinse contains fluoride, spit well, but best not to rinse--the remaining rinse continues to add Fluoride into your tooth. If it is to kill germs in mouth, ; you do not want the chemicals to be absorbed by your body, rinse off. Most otc products seem to expect no-rinse to offer its efficacy, however. Spit well. ...Read more
Use alcohol free: Alcohol can cause a burning sensation in the oral cavity tissue.. The truth is that the "burn" we experience is actually a bad thing, especially for chronic bad breath sufferers who use mouthwash many times a day and for people who have been using an alcohol mouthwash for many years. Long term exposure to alcohol can potentially lead to oral sores or even oral cancer. ...Read more
Today I made the mistake of using isopropyl alchahol instead of my usual mouthwash, and then I read it is harmful to the mouth, will that damage heal?
Of course: Isopropyl alcohol is dangerous to swallow (esp. large amounts) but in the mouth is just a mild irritant. Our bodies have an amazing capacity to heal themselves and the mucous membranes of the mouth heal the quickest. If you have ever burned your mouth on pizza or other hot food, no matter how bad the burn it is usually all better the next day. Any damage should fully heal very quickly. ...Read more

How do I get mouthwash remnants out of my mouth if i can't eat or drink anything for 30 minutes afterwards?
If it is a Fluoride mouthwash, you want to follow the instructions exactly. The purpose is for the Fluoride mouthwash, which remains after spitting out the excess, to be absorbed onto tooth structure, thereby reducing decay or sensitivity.
You should have nothing to eat or drink for at least 30 minutes, which would reduce the effectiveness of this treatment. ...Read more

Our dog just nipped and my son’s mouth and his gum is bleeding. It has stopped. Does he need an injection or would some sort of mouthwash be suffic?
Your son needs to be assessed properly URGENTLY/NOW.
There is always a question/suspicion of Rabies - a very important disease to be looked out for and prevented - you'll need a doctor for this.
And the prevention/treatment of bacterial infections that may ensue from these kind of incidents.
There is also the proper assessment/management of the actual wound/s.

Mouth wash and children? Is there an age at which we should start our son on mouth wash to help prevent cavities? He's five now, and always wants to try what's in the mouthwash bottle. I know not to give him that, but are there any child-appropriate flavo
Hello. : Hello. It isn't recommended for children under six years old to use mouthwash. They should be supervised when they use mouthwash to ensure that they don't swallow it. If a child swallowed a lot of fluorinated mouth wash, he or she could develop fluorosis which could leave spots on the teeth. Children should not use mouth washes that contain alcohol (for obvious reasons). There are many children's rinses that have child-friendly flavors and that come in colorful packaging. Just walk through the dental aisle of your grocery store and you will see an array of products. You would be the best one to know which of those flavors was likely to appeal to your son. ...Read more
I agree with: Dr. Davantzis. As a matter of fact, some mouth washes may actually make the ulcers feel worse as well as not hastening their healing. Finally, there are many different types of mouth ulcers and they occur as a result of many different causes. It would be helpful to know for sure exactly what type you get. ...Read more
It's possible: Blisters, erosions and sores in the mouth can be caused by many different things. Some are contagious (herpes simplex virus) and many are not (canker sores, lichen planus, pemphigus vulgaris). Mouthwashes can be very harsh on the sensitive mucosa in the mouth and can lead to ulcers/erosions. Have this checked out to find the exact cause as this is important for long term treatment decisions. ...Read more
Our dog nipped at my son’s mouth and his gum was bleeding. Do I need to take him for injection or will a mouthwash be enough?
Used a mouthwash rinse for the first time. It really dried my mouth out and after about 3 weeks the dr. Said i had thrush. Is that normal?
Not normal: Mouthwash shouldn't cause thrush--it should help prevent it. Find a better mouthwash! i recommend listerine or crest prohealth (or the generic equivalents). The real question is why did you get thrush, since it is unlikely the mouthwash caused the thrush. So what is the underlying health issue that allowed a fungal infection to occur? What did the dr. Say? ...Read more
After using mouth wash should we spit out and wash with water? Or spit out and leave the remaining mouthwash in the mouth without rinsing out?
Better no rinse: Better to spit out and not rinse with water right away. Doesn't hurt to rinse, brush with toothpaste, rinse with mouth wash (hopefully an anti-plaque, anti-tarter rinse,) and then floss ...Read more

Dry mouth treatment:
The treatment depends on the cause, but dry mouth is often a side effect of medication. Dry mouth may improve with an adjusted dosage or a new prescription. For example replace Phenergan (promethazine) , Promethazine with Zofran. Sip water as much as you can, use OTC (xylitol) saliva substitutes, practice nose breathing.

Homemade rinse: I noticed a lot of questions about sores in the mouth today. Most of them are caused by viruses and will go away by themselves. Nothing will make them leave faster. But mixing Benadryl (diphenhydramine) with maalox (one to one mix) and swish around the mouth may give you relief from the burn and pain of the sores. Also avoid sour foods. You need to keep hydrated, cold drinks and popsicles also help. ...Read more
