My 2 year old sons stool are green. Is that normal. He currently has flu?

My 2 year old sons stool are green. Is that normal. He currently has flu?

Normal: The stool color is provided by the bile from the liver that is adds to fecal debris. It starts out a deep green & slowly changes thru greens to yellows to browns as the germs in the intestines metabolize the bile. Green generally means the stool in question moved through faster or was subject to less change by gut germs. ...Read more

Lots of causes: First define the problem (do you have soft or frequent stool?), circumstances under which diarrhea developed (malabsorption, pancreatic maldigestion, food intolerances, stressful times, exposure to ill individuals, food poisoning, ischemic gut, inflammatory colitis, etc.), severity (stool volume, dehydration, blood, night-time awakening, weight loss), & duration. I just recently had the flu and I noticed my stool is light colored now. Can the flu cause this?

Flu stool color: Flu is a very broad term. Stomach flu? URI flu? Which one? Light colored stool is also not very specific and in the eye of the beholder. Does it look like milk, or white, or are you stools normally very dark like black and now are not so? Show to your team. Depends on what you eat and your stool transit time. Recommend you google stool color and look at images and see how you match up. ...Read more

My husband is just getting over the flu and said that he had a dark green stool with mucus. Would that have anything to do with the flu?

Depends: Influenza is a fairly acute illness most commonly in the colder months of the year with chills, fever, respiratory symptoms, and occasionally abdominal symptoms. Viral gastrointestinal illnesses are due to different types of non respiratory viruses and are associated with vomiting and diarrhea. Green stool with mucus can occur with either illness. Diagnosed with stomach flu on Monday haven't thrown up or had stool since Thursday can I eat normally now? Fries, pickles, chips, etc...

I don't recommend it: If you are recovering from "stomach flu" and are starting to feel hungry again, no vomiting or diarrhea, it's fine to start adding solids to your diet, however I would take it easy af first. Try something bland, low in fat, and easy to digest (chicken noodle soup, crackers, toast etc) before trying anything oily, fried, or spicy! Your digestive system is recovering, you don't want to shock it! :) ...Read more

Go In Now: Blood in the stool is a reason to get prompt medical evaluation.
Also, if you have a gastrointestinal bug which causes bloody stools, again is a reason to go in for an evaluation. Only a few causes of gastroenteritis have bloody stool as a finding and may need antibiotics.
Lightheadedness/almost passing out could represent blood loss, or more commonly significant dehydration. ...Read more

The stomach bug..: It is possible that you have the flu, but flu infection often causes pulmonary symptoms in adults, such coughing/wheezes etc. And more with gastrointestinal symptoms in younger children. Viral gastroenteritis (stomach bug) is more likely the cause of your trouble. Tums/peptobismol and some Motrin may help, along with increase of fluid for couple of days. If worsens, call doc. Good luck. ...Read more

Virus: If this is a viral intestinal tract infection causing diarrhea or loose stools, the color change is to be expected due to more rapid transit of stools through the intestinal tract and would be a temporary situation. Disorders of liver, pancreas or gall bladder can also cause these color changes. If bm's don't revert to normal after several days, consult your physician or gastroenterologist. ...Read more
