See you doctor: It sounds like strep throat. A quick visit to your doctor should verify. Usually a round of antibiotics will resolve the issue. If it is painful ask for a viscous lidocaine rinse. This will numb the area while your body recovers. Hope this helps! ...Read more

Maybe: Mono symptoms are much more pronounced than what you are describing. Usually the tonsils are swollen and tender and look awful. You can always ask your doctor to get a mono blood titer or a blood test on you to diagnose mono. ...Read more

Viral or bacterial?: This could be a viral infection as it can present with redness, swelling, pain and white patches. Strep throat is another cause but it often has a higher fever and more clinical/body symptoms where the viral is usually more local symptoms.
