Mri (Definition)

Mri or magnetic resonance imaging is one of the more recently developed imaging modalities available to physicians. It uses powerful magnets to generate images. There is no ionizing radiation which is a major advantage over many other modalities. Mri is the best imaging exam that we have for most soft tissue and joint related problems. There are radiologists ...Read more

What do black spots that appear on an MRI of the brain mean?

What do black spots that appear on an MRI of the brain mean?

It depends....: How white, grey or black signal on an MRI scan is interpreted depends on the type of sequence that spot appears in. So without knowing the sequence, i can only guess. If these are scattered black dots they could represent small foci of old hemorrhage or iron deposition. If it is a bigger spot it could represent a fluid collection. I really would have to see the images to give you an answer. ...Read more

What can spots on the brain an MRI indicate?

What can spots on the brain an MRI indicate?

Need more info: "spots" can mean a lot of things. Most commonly, there are small areas of increased signal on t2 or flair MRI sequences which generally represent small "scars" or gliosis. It is not unusual to have 1 of these areas for every 10 years of age, so a 50 year old person could have 5-6 and be considered normal. However, the spots you mean could be something completely different. Ask your doctor. ...Read more

My brain MRI says one small area of increased signal on flair images in the right parietal white matter- what does this mean?

May be nothing or?: Your clinical history- the reason you had the MRI- may be a clue. Many brains show one small area of flair signal. These are often due to headaches, head injuries, high blood pressure, changes in blood flow, etc. They are not by themselves an indicator of much. If you had many of these, and symptoms of MS, they could be related. A single small area though is not alarming. ...Read more

Had normal brain MRI in 2014 (headaches and optical migraines). Doc mentioned white spots apparently from the headaches. It scared me tho. common?

Mixed bag: This web article is on point: http://www.dizziness-and-balance.com/disorders/central/pvm.htm About half of normal folks over 65 have T2 abnormalities (white spots). Folks in their 40s with migraines can also present this way. What causes bright spots in 1 year old brain mri?

Lots of things: "bright spots" on an MRI have various causes. They can range from benign, insignificant findings to infections, injuries, metabolic problems and more. An MRI is only a tool, and the findings need to be put in the context of the patient's clinical condition. Mri's are often ordered unnecessarily and then odd findings (like bright spots) can make a straightforward case much more confusing. ...Read more

I have high calcium levels, brain MRI showed spots in white matter, pain on right side abdomin. Dr mentioned aphasia-can all these be realted? Im 41

Possible: Exact scenario may be hard. Need ct of chest, abdomen, & pelvis to rule out any cancer that could cause high calcium or sarcoidosis. If not done, need parathyroid and vitamin d levels. It may be that you take calcium or Tums that increased your calcium in blood which if high enough causes confusion and weakness. If so, brain findings may relate to a virus possibly herpes vs others. ...Read more

Every time I cough my head hurts more in the same spot. I have a brain mri scheduled , is it safe to take antihistamine to stop cough? I’m concerned.

Cough: To suppress a dry hacking cough it is safe for you to take an antihistamine combined in cough syrup that has dextromethorphan(antihistamine DM elixir). The antihistamine may cause some drowsiness. You can ask your pharmacist to recommend one. Claritin is a non drowsy antihistamine but on its own, may not suppress a hacking cough. ...Read more

Small white spot: A single small white spot should not be cause for concern. It can be caused by high blood pressure. Since you have high blood pressure, it makes sense to use a little aspirin. We see white spots in 50% of our brain MRI's up here. If you also have headaches, it is reasonable to have the MRA test. Otherwise I am not sure why this test was ordered. ...Read more

How likely am i to be diagnosed with ms? I originally went to the doctor for numbness and tingling in my hand and foot and have gotten severe pain in my opposite arm and hip on two occasions. One white spot was found on my brain mri, minor degenerative c

Hard to say: One white spot on brain MRI is nonspecific. If it is in a particular area (corpus callosum) it would be more concerning, otherwise it could have been from prior brain infection (encephalitis) or trauma (shearing injury). Your symptoms are a bit more worrisome. Perhaps a spinal fluid analysis will help. Neurology consult would be useful. ...Read more
