Should I be concerned for my daughters ultrasound results? A bright spot was found on the heart ventricle?

Not usually: Sometimes the "bright spot" is an incidental finding - in fact, often it is non-specific, meaning not clinically significant. Discuss with your cardiologist to review how to best follow-up/monitor. ...Read more

Sonogram (Definition)

An ultraound, also known as a sonogram, is a painless and relatively inexpensive imaging test that utilizes sound waves instead of ionizing radiation. There are no side effects. Ultrasound can give us two-dimensional, and in some applications three-dimensional, images of structures and organs in virtually any part of the body. In addition to diagnostic uses, such as evaluating abnormalities in the abdomen, pelvis, and breast, ultrasounds are commonly used to guide needle and catheter placement in a variety of surgical ...Read more

What is a heart mumur? Can it be detected during an ultrasound? What causes it? can zofran (ondansetron) be the cause? If no family Hx of heart diseases or defects?

What is a heart mumur? Can it be detected during an ultrasound? What causes it? can zofran (ondansetron) be the cause? If no family Hx of heart diseases or defects?

Heart murmur: Heart murmur is simply a noise heard by an examiner originating in the heart. The common denominator among all causes is turbulent blood flow. This may be normal (children, pregnancy), physiologic (anemia, fever, XS thyroid) or pathologic (valve or architecture abnormality). Zofran (ondansetron) is not a cause. Echocardiography (heart ultrasound) is the test of choice to evaluate. ...Read more

Palpitations : Palpitations are often benign. Everyone has few extra heart beats and some people feel them. As long as the amount of extra systoles is not high, there's nothing to worry about. ...Read more

Why would a doctor on this site refer me to an oncologist after I asked why I saw dark spots on my heart during a echo stress test?

Why would a doctor on this site refer me to an oncologist after I asked why I saw dark spots on my heart during a echo stress test?

Dark spots?: Hopefully you had normal cardiac function on the stress echocardiogram test. Sometimes an echocardiogram will show "dark spots" near the heart. These might be enlarged lymph nodes that should be evaluated by additional studies (CAT scan of the chest) and it is also reasonable to see an oncologist since there is a slight chance the lymph nodes could represent lymphoma. ...Read more

Anatomy ultrasound of the heart, what do they look for?

A lot: Another term for this is echocardiogram or echo for short. We can evaluate the heart function (how does it squeeze and how does it relax). We can see and evalate the heart valves and look for blockage or leak. We can look for tumors of the heart, holes in the heart, and clots in the heart. Echo is extemely important in evaluating function and anatomy of the heart. ...Read more

Can you tell by ultrasound if a baby has congential heart defects?

Depends: The results of a prenatal ultrasound depend on the sensitivity of the equipment used, the technician and the person interpreting the study. Some studies are fine for locating the fetal position, placental location and estimating fetal size, but little more. Most newer machines are capable of picking up most defects but a few will not be evident. Newborn exam and postnatal study may be needed. ...Read more

Can a ultrasound of the heart detect heart defect in asymptomatic adult?

Can a ultrasound of the heart detect heart defect in asymptomatic adult?

Possibly...: You may have a "subclinical" defect (such as a very small atrial septal defect) that is not large enough to generate symptoms, yet could potentially be picked up on an echocardiogram. You may also have the most common congenital heart defect ( a bicuspid aortic valve) which could also be picked up on echo and which could be asymptomatic. ...Read more

What kind of ultrasound is it when they do the bubble study on your heart?

What kind of ultrasound is it when they do the bubble study on your heart?

Bubble crossing: It is called saline contrast study. Saline with a tiny amount of air is agitated and injected into the vein. This can be well seen by echo. If it crosses from the right heart chambers to the left then it is an indication of a hole in the heart which could potentially carry a blood clot from the right side to the left side of the heart and then to the brain. This is an uncommon cause for stroke. ...Read more

My daughter has been found to have a heart defect? I am so angry, how could they have missed it on ultrasounds?

Normal response: It is certainly normal for you to feel angry when you get bad news. The fact is ultrasounds vary in sensitivity with the training of the operator & interpreter & the machine used for the procedures. Some us's can verify position of baby, placenta & confirm dates but little more, some are so detailed you see almost everything.Still some defects will only be spotted after birth when blood flow changes. ...Read more

I was told by a echo ultrasound of my baby that she has a hole in her heart and it will disappear afterwards should I be worry?

Trust provider: Fetal blood circulation requires a connection between the two sides of the heart. Normally, this closes during birth, but it's common to remain connected infancy, then close themselves during early childhood posing no threat. If your provider suggested it would close itself, then it's likely common & not dangerous. Keep follow up appointments & recommendations. You shouldn't worry. ...Read more

How does a heart ultrasound work?

How does a heart ultrasound work?

Echocardiogram: Acoustic waves (in the mega-hz so they can't be heard) are sent from the probe and the time the reflected wave takes to return is measured. This is similar to sonar. For moving structures, like valves and blood, the machine takes advantage of the doppler effect (notice the change in tone of the train whistle as it passes a station) to measure velocities. ...Read more

A lot. It can show: Motion and function of valves, heart muscle thickness, chamber size, wall motion, ability of the atria and ventricles to empty, and can show valve incompetence.
