It depends: This depends on sun exposure. In spring & summer if you get some mid-day sun without sunscreen you don't need to take any. Everyone should take d in fall & winter as the sun is not high enough for the rays that produce d to reach us. Most adults need 5-8, 000 iu/day for optimal levels. See http://www.Vitamindcouncil.Org/about-vitamin-d/how-do-i-get-the-vitamin-d-my-body-needs/ for details. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Maybe: Recently we have realized how important vitamin d is and how many people are deficient. We require sunlight to "activate" the vitamin d we get in foods, some people don't get enough in food anyway. Check with your doctor, they can measure your vitamin d level. Most people can take 1000 iu daily with no risk of any potential toxicity so i recommend adding that amount daily to most of my patients. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
I have low Vitamin D a level of 13.I was started out on a 50000 D2 supplement and became sick after 1 pill. What could I take now to br ok no it up?
Would taking 1800 mcg of vitamin d +400 mcg of calcium in be too much to take? Vitamin d low with 1400 mcg supplemented daily. I am 47yr old female.
Ask your doctor: If you have low vitamin D three levels, you should probably start supplementing. However because it is a fat-soluble vitamin, it can accumulate and build up reserves rather quickly, so you want to follow your doctor's advice on how quickly or fast s/he wants to do this. Also your ratio of calcium is off. So best to discuss this with your doctor to get you back on track. ...Read more
Vitamin D was low 17nmol/l.I took vit D supplement 10,000 IU for 2month it become 156 nmol/l .should I take supplement always ?!or stop¡
Depends on sun exp.: 156 nmol/l = 62 ng/ml which is just where you want it (optimal levels are 50-80). But if you stop the levels will likely decline, so it seems wise to continue 10,000 iu/day. The only other way to get significant amounts of D is via exposure to mid-day sun without use of sun screen. If you don't get sun, then it is wise to continue supplementation. Too Low at least 30+: At one time the normal level was considered to be 20 ng/dL. As more has been learned about vitamin D and it's effects on the whole body that was raised to 30 or 32 depending on the lab. However, the normal range goes from 30 to 100 and from that you can see even 30 may be low, but you can get too much too. Other lab values that can help when looking at approp of vitamin D and supp as well. ...Read more
