How do I know how much vitamin d supplement should I take?

How do I know how much vitamin d supplement should I take?

It depends: This depends on sun exposure. In spring & summer if you get some mid-day sun without sunscreen you don't need to take any. Everyone should take d in fall & winter as the sun is not high enough for the rays that produce d to reach us. Most adults need 5-8, 000 iu/day for optimal levels. Should I take vitamin d supplement?

Should I take vitamin d supplement?

Maybe: Recently we have realized how important vitamin d is and how many people are deficient. We require sunlight to "activate" the vitamin d we get in foods, some people don't get enough in food anyway. Check with your doctor, they can measure your vitamin d level. Most people can take 1000 iu daily with no risk of any potential toxicity so i recommend adding that amount daily to most of my patients. ...Read more

Is vitamin D result 23 Too LOW SHOULD I TAKE SUPPLEMENTS OR THE LEVEL IS FINE?

Is vitamin D result 23 Too LOW SHOULD I TAKE SUPPLEMENTS OR THE LEVEL IS FINE?

Too Low at least 30+: At one time the normal level was considered to be 20 ng/dL. As more has been learned about vitamin D and it's effects on the whole body that was raised to 30 or 32 depending on the lab. However, the normal range goes from 30 to 100 and from that you can see even 30 may be low, but you can get too much too. Other lab values that can help when looking at approp of vitamin D and supp as well. ...Read more

My vitamin d was 24 last time checked. Should i still take a D3 supplement and if so, is there a certain brand that's best?

My vitamin d was 24 last time checked. Should i still take a D3 supplement and if so, is there a certain brand that's best?

Yes, however...: Normal levels of Vit D are 30-100, though 50-80 is the optimal level. Achieving good levels helps prevent heart disease, cancer, autoimmune disease, infections etc. In fall & winter all adults should take 5-8000 iu/day. In spring and summer spending about 20 min. in mid-day sun without sunscreen can give enough D but if you don't do that take year-round. Best with K. Many good brands- see comment: ...Read more

Vitamin D was low 17nmol/l.I took vit D supplement 10,000 IU for 2month it become 156 nmol/l .should I take supplement always ?!or stop¡

Vitamin D was low 17nmol/l.I took vit D supplement 10,000 IU for 2month it become 156 nmol/l .should I take supplement always ?!or stop¡

Depends on sun exp.: 156 nmol/l = 62 ng/ml which is just where you want it (optimal levels are 50-80). But if you stop the levels will likely decline, so it seems wise to continue 10,000 iu/day. The only other way to get significant amounts of D is via exposure to mid-day sun without use of sun screen. If you don't get sun, then it is wise to continue supplementation.
