Valve (Definition)

A valve is a structure that regulates the direction of flow. The heart is a special kind of pump. It moves blood by squeezing and relaxing. There are 4 chambers and each chamber has a valve. This keeps blood from moving backwards when the heart squeezes. When a chamber squeezes it lets the blood move forward but when the chamber is relaxed it prevents the blood from ...Read more

Is a leaking heart valve a serious condition? How is it treated?

Is a leaking heart valve a serious condition? How is it treated?

Leaking Heart Valve: Not to worry too much about mild leakage. Need follow-up and monitoring for moderate leakage. If it is serious leak then you should be evaluated further into to know whether you are symptomatic or not? Whether your heart is still compensating or not? Managament depends upon type of heart valve and degree of leakage and associated comorbid conditions. ...Read more

Can a leaking heart valve be repaired and/or replaced without opening the chest?

Sometimes: Nothing available for the mitral or tricuspid valves yet, but the aortic valve can be replaced with a transcatheter inserted valve. This is not for everyone though. It is still considered rather experimental, and reserved only for those who are unable to have open heart surgery. I look forward to advances in these procedures, and hope one day there is a routine, non-ohs alternative. ...Read more

My sister has a leaking heart valve and she is 27 could she have go get a pacemaker when she gets older?

My sister has a leaking heart valve and she is 27 could she have go get a pacemaker when she gets older?

Unlikely: Valvular heart disease is a "plumbing" problem while arrhythmias and pacemakers are more electrical issues. Of course, there is some overlap, but generally speaking, those are somewhat unrelated issues. Leaking heart valves, if significant, may eventually require medication or even intervention or surgery. Pacemakers are not really part of the therapy unless a rhythm problem eventually develops. ...Read more

How often does a ficial heart murmur heal itself and can a leaking heart valve close itself? Also he hasn't seen cardiologist since diagnosed @ 15mo

How often does a ficial heart murmur heal itself and can a leaking heart valve close itself? Also he hasn't seen cardiologist since diagnosed @ 15mo

Uncertain terms: I don't know what the word "ficial" means. Most children who have a heart murmur have a "normal" murmur. That means that there is noise with blood flow, but no actual underlying abnormality causing the noise. This is a normal finding, and typically, with growth, the murmur disappears. Other terms that people use are "innocent" and "functional" to describe such murmurs. ...Read more

"Novacaine": "novacaine" is no longer used in dentistry. There are other anesthetics that are available. After your complete medical history is reviewed, it will be evaluated and a proper way to procede will be formulated. Could my heart valve leaking become a serious problem?

Possibly: 100% of human beings have some leaking of the heart valves. I can't remember the last time I saw an echo with none. Echoes have become exquisitely senstive and can detect the most minute amount of leaking. That said, severe leaking eventually takes its toll and needs to be fixed at some point (and there are very specific criteria for timing that). ...Read more

Can I take virectin if I have atrial fibrilation which seems to be caused by the fact that I have a mild leak in the heart valve.?

Not relevant: 1-atrial fibrillation can have many underlying triggers but "mild" leak in heart valve should not be one of them 2-virectin has very little science underlying its advertising's purported benefits-more snake oil but unlikely to be particularly harmful. ...Read more
