Where is the epiphyseal plate located in the body?

Where is the epiphyseal plate located in the body?

End of long-bones: The epiphyseal plate is in the metaphyseal region, that is, near the ends, of long bones. They are present in children as they are from where bone growth occurs. They close at various times during development. The plates are closed and not seen in adults.

What is the epiphyseal plate function?

What is the epiphyseal plate function?

Growth plate.: Epiphyseal plates are the growth plates and are found at the end of long bones. They are the site of new bone growth. In adults the plates stop producing new bone and fuse to the bone leaving an epiphyseal line.

What age will epiphyseal plate close?

What age will epiphyseal plate close?

Depends on the plate: Most females stop growing around 14 and males around 16. (there are exceptions.) the epiphyseal plates close around this time. Although some plates in the clavicle don't close until people are in their early 20s.

When is the closure of the epiphyseal plate?

When is the closure of the epiphyseal plate?

Varies: Every epiphyseal or "growth" plate closes at a different age, and also varies between boys and girls with girls maturing on average a few years earlier and thus their growth plates closing earlier as well.

How can I injure the epiphyseal plate (growth plate)?

How can I injure the epiphyseal plate (growth plate)?

See below: The growth plate is present in children and usually closed by age 14. Injury occurs from direct trauma and there are many stages of growth plate injury.

Where on the epiphyseal plate can an osteocyte be found?

Where on the epiphyseal plate can an osteocyte be found?

Found in bone: Osteocyte is a mature osteoblast that has become entrapped in the bone it produces, usually found in lacuna within the bone and continues to develop bone. Epiphyseal plate zone of ossification contains both osteoblasts and osteocytes.

What could happen when the epiphyseal plate is replaced by bone?

What could happen when the epiphyseal plate is replaced by bone?

Growth arrest: Growth stops. If one side of the bone stops growing then can lead to angular deformity as the other side continues to grow. If the entire growth plate closes symmetrically then growth will simply stop at that location.

What causes the epiphyseal plate of long bones to close too early?

Injury typically: The growth plate of bones can close (fuse) too early. One reason can be injury to the growth plate, such as a fracture that crosses or involves it. There certainly are times that it can close early without any known cause as well. Additionally, surgery that involves the plate can cause it problems as well.

What causes the epiphyseal plate of the long bones of children to close too early?

Plate closure: Usually exposure to sex hormones ie androgens or estrogens. These are more likely to be elevated in precocious puberty or adrenal disorders. Environmental exposure is rare but on the list.

Heard the epiphyseal plate of the long bones of short children closes too early. What might be the cause?

Heard the epiphyseal plate of the long bones of short children closes too early. What might be the cause?

Not early - genes: We have a large number of growth plates throughout our body and the do follow a somewhat predictable schedule on their closure age. However, some children's will close a bit earlier than others and this is largely affected by genes and gender.

If a 15yo boy breaks a bone and doctor becomes very concerned the fracture is in the area of epiphyseal plate what are options?

If a 15yo boy breaks a bone and doctor becomes very concerned the fracture is in the area of epiphyseal plate what are options?

Same as Other Fractu: As with all fractures, it depends upon the problem. Even with involvement of the growth plate, immobilzation for some, surgical repair for others. The orthopedist knows what is best for the specific situation.

How do I find a platic surgeon that has performed back lifts before? I have had almost all my body lifted want to get off rolls on back?

How do I find a platic surgeon that has performed back lifts before? I have had almost all my body lifted want to get off rolls on back?

Online and referrals: I would contact your primary care md or bariatric surgeon if you have had bariatric surgery. Otherwise, I would search for local plastic surgeons that have experience with massive weight loss patients.

Two days ago, I swallowed a small piece of plastic which was broken from a fork I was using. Would it be harmful to my body? Would it get digested?

It could be: Harmful, as if it was sharp, it could have damaged your intestinal tract ranging from your esophagus all the way to your colon. But if it was a very small piece, more than likely it became encapsulated by your stool and at this point, you've likely already pooped it out. You can't digest plastic. At this point, you need to monitor for abdominal pain. If you develop pain reach out to your doc.

What will happen if I accidently swallowed a piece of a plastic wrapper from a popsicle? How do I know that it is in my body system? Please help.

Watch for symptoms: When you swallow something that is small usually the body gets rid of it in your stools. However, if the object is significantly large it might cause intestinal obstruction which requires immediate evaluation. You might present with abdominal pain and difficulty passing stools. If you are presenting symptoms please consider going to the ED.

I swallowed a small plastic bb. Will it effect my body or my blood or will it just pass.??

I swallowed a small plastic bb. Will it effect my body or my blood or will it just pass.??

Should pass: This object is small enough so it shouldn't get caught up in the gastrointestinal tract. I would expect passage rectally within a few days. Contact a physician if you experience discomfort in the chest or abdomen. Obviously the bb bypassed the respiratory tract.
