If : If i were in a location where someone had a collapsed lung, at the very least, betadine, if available, and an 18g angiocath needle would suffice to emergently release air from the pleural space and allow the collapsed lung to reexpand. This is of course merely a temporary maneuver, depending on the size of the injury to the lung. I would only try this maneuver if i had the proper skills and education as to the location of the lung, major blood vessels and after weighing the risks and benefits. But, in the case of do or die, a needle placed in the lateral midaxillary line or two fingers width "south" in relation to the clavicle, should adequately allow a needle to be safely inserted into the pleural space.
