Pain control/US: Get an ultrasound to make sure there is no ovarian torsion. Finding a balance between pain and daily life is sometimes difficult. Expecting to be pain free is not possible because there is a ruptured cyst. Try acetaminophen and/or NSAID such as advil or aleve (naproxen). Make sure blood counts are okay. Speak with your gynecologist to see if surgery is the appropriate treatment. ...Read more
Bleeding: Most cysts don't burst actually. A corpus luteum bursts as it releases an egg, which is part of normal ovulation. The "ruptured cyst" is actually bleeding into the corpus luteum after the cyst naturally ruptures, which can be quite painful for many months. But other kinds of cysts basically never burst, and in fact the ovary can stretch quite huge without rupturing. ...Read more
Fluid is absorbed: An ovarian cyst is simply a fluid collection that develops in an ovarian follicle. When a cyst breaks open, the fluid goes into the abdomen where it is absorbed by the body. You can sometimes have some minor discomfort if the cyst fluid is irritating to your internal organs. Your ovary is very good at healing itself when this happens and there usually are not any long-term problems. ...Read more

Rest and Ibuprofen:
When an ovarian cyst ruptures, the cyst fluid irritates your insides causing pain. Usually this pain lasts only a few days and then goes away on its own. It is usually treated with something like Ibuprofen to help with the pain as your body reabsorbs the fluid.
If you have pain that lasts for months, its unlikely to be from a ruptured ovarian cyst. See your doctor. ...Read more

Symptoms vary: An ovarian cyst can resolve on its own without symptoms. It can also rupture causing pain that requires emergency surgery. Usually surgery is not necessary and the pain is short-lived and tolerable. It is recommended that the patient avoid strenuous exercise because of the possibility of torsion of the ovary. If the ovary twists it can cut off its blood supply and die requiring surgery. ...Read more

How long should the irritation from an ovarian cyst last. I have one burst about 6 weeks ago and still having sever pain around my ovary.
6-8 weeks: Normally, a ruptured cyst resolves in 6-8 wks. It depends on the size of the cyst and how much fluid spilled. Your body has to reabsorb the fluid. Sometimes, scar tissues forms as a result and causes chronic pain. Wait 2 more weeks, if not better, go see your gynecologist. You probably need a repeat ultrasound to be sure it's gone. If the pain is severe, go now. ...Read more

Unclear why/not safe: Your real, significant risks in taking contraceptive pills at this point in your life (age 47, cardiac arrhythmias...) seem to outweigh the minimal, questionable benefits of suppressing your ovulation (OCPunfortunately will not be effective in preventing another ovarian cyst)Depending on the "pathology of your burst ovarian cyst" which I presume was removed surgically, recurrence is unlikely. ...Read more
