Where Can I Get An Enema Done
It is uncomfortable:
Most patients tolerate the procedure very well. I think younger patients fare better.
There is much turning and rolling during the procedure to coat the mucosa.
The colon has to be distended with air to image the colon lining.
This is uncomfortable and varies for each patient. This does not last long. Being well prepped (bowel cleansing) and relaxed for the exam helps. ...Read more

Try taking some deep breaths. Remember that area of the body will open to even the slightest stroke so your body will do 90% of the work if you don't tense up. Easier said than done, right?
So try a warm bath or shower, deep breaths, ipod (music) and good thoughts prior to these procedures. ...Read more

Yes, rarely: Rare cases of rectal perforation with the enema tip are known to occur. If there is a weakness of the colon wall from a prior surgical repair there may be leakage of the barium outside of the colon. If we know of such risks we will often start the procedure with water soluble contrast which is less trublesome for leakage but less adequate for imaging. ...Read more
My 6 year old daughter has had problems with her bowels for years. Recently had get an enema. Her dr hasn't testd her for anything. Could it b chrohns?
Stool retention: I would have her evaluated by a developmental pediatrician. My evaluation of such cases includes a general & dietary history, time of onset, previous treatments & successes. An exam that focuses on the abdomen & rectum, abdominal x-ray & occasionally a contrast enema. Most kids who reach this level of dysfunction need a bowel rehab plan that requires 6m of effort & lots of tears & frustration. Good luck. ...Read more
I wouldn't worry: Remember gastroenterologists complete colonoscopies everday and during this procedure this requires insufflation (pumping the colon up with air!). Air embolism is exceptionally rare. And remember this procedure is completed under much more pressure than an enema would create. So in the end, I wouldn't worry to much. Hope this helps. ...Read more
I am having a barium enema done and they told me to use a water enema. I have saline. Is this ok to use?
Saline is good...: Not too many people stock saline at home, but if you have it at home, it is ok to use with your enema. Saline is basically water +salt+chloride in concentration slightly higher than your plasma (blood fluid without the red/white cells). It is probably a safer enema to use then water, but the difference is likely not significant. Good luck with your procedure. ...Read more
When you get a barium enema, how long or round is piece that is inserted into rectum? I am nervous about the whole procedure!
Not Big: I've been the inserter and the insertee. The tip is about as thick as an index finger with a mild area of widening about an inch from the end of the tip. A small balloon may be inflated after the tip is inserted (with lots of lubricant). The balloon helps you keep the enema from leaking out. Only a few inches of the tip will get inserted. Try not to get too worked up. The prep is a bigger deal. ...Read more
