I just injected 40 units of lantus (insulin glargine). It bled a decent drop until I pressed the area with my boxers. How can you tell if you inject into a vein?
Don't Worry: This is an old concern & particularly with rapid insulin. With insulin pens & small needles it is hard to hit a large vein. You most likely hit a venule, a very small branch of a vein, & the needle will actually pass through it. The insulin will deposit behind the vein the Lantus (insulin glargine) slowly release, but you will bleed a little. If Lantus (insulin glargine) is in a venule it will likely clot & the Lantus (insulin glargine) work normally. ...Read more

YES: The peak expiratory flow rate (pefr, also known as a peak flow) is the maximal rate that a person can exhale during a short maximal expiratory effort after a full inspiration. In patients with asthma, the pefr percent predicted correlates reasonably well with the percent predicted value for the forced expiratory volume in one second (fev1). What can you tell me about lead levels (in a 1-year-old) coming back positive by a finger prick as opposed to getting blood through the vein?
Fingerstick lead: levels are done as a screening. If they are normal, then there's no concern. However, they can be falsely elevated because of environmental lead outside of the body, so if the screening fingerstick level is high, your child will need a repeat venous sample. I only order venous samples for that reason. ...Read more

If you measured Vital Capacity AND measured it correctly you may be at the low end of normal. Vital Capacity is not generally measured without a clinical indication. How do pulse oximeters work? Does their light HAVE to go through a fingernail or will any part of the finger do?
In fact,: the oximeter is so sophisticated that it only measures the substance that has "changing absorbance" (arterial blood"); it is able to disregard "non-changing absorbance" i.e. tissues like skin, muscle or nail. The fingernail, then, has nothing to do with the measurement. Hemoglobin in blood absorbs different light wavelengths; these are compared and computed to come up with the oxygen sat. Amazing! ...Read more
