When You Take Medince Fro Low Vit D
What can I take as an alternative to adcal-d3? It tastes disgusting and my levels of vit d are low. Thank you!
Generic D3: Get the cheapest generic vitamin d3 you can at a pharmacy or discount store. You generally want to take 2000 units/day, which will normalize levels in about 90 days. If you need calcium, try some of the otc brands, depending upon your dietary calcium levels and needs for supplements. Take w/meals to avoid problems. D can also be taken 10k/week and 50k/month, but not as effective. ...Read more
In young ppl suffering osteoprosis due to low vit d how much time take to be normal bmd after starting medication?
Uncertain.: The answer depends on the correct diagnosis. If severe vitamin d deficiency is present for a prolonged time osteomalacia (impaired bone mineralization) may occur. Vitamin d over a period of months could normalize bmd. If mild deficiency of vitamin d is present osteoporosis could develop. In that case there would not be great improvement in bmd. High serum alklaline phosphatase= osteomalacia. ...Read more

Low vit d level in report feeling week all the time takes long time to recover after any physical exercise, can it be low protien also?
Probably not protein: Your symptoms could be due to many conditions but at your young age low protein is not likely unless you are eating a very low protein diet. I would suggest a complete exam by your doctor and testing for anemia and thyroid disease. Make sure you are taking adequate vitamin D3 if it has been found to be low. ...Read more
Last bld wk I had low vit d of 6, was prescribed vit d 50, 000 iu d2 but read online that this form is really not effective that I should take vit d3?
Will OTC supplements be enough to cure my very low vit d level (20)? I take 2000 units occasionally but still went from 30 down to only 20.
D3 is Active Form: Make sure you are talking about d3, not d or d2 which are inactive & have to be converted in liver, kidney, etc. To d3, calcitriol, the active form. If 20 applies to d3, then about 50, 000 iu once weekly for about 3 months, then recheck, would be reasonable. Goal >40, probably ~60, commonly reasonable. Bio-tech d3-50 50, 000 iu/cap a choice I have used & available online. Beware of many in stores. ...Read more
My gp said I am low on vit d, and its 41, and the normal was 50, he said that I have to take pills. Is that level too bad and should I do smth else?
Rx'd Vit D 50, 000 units weekly x 12 wks, but I don't know level. Is 12 wks standard prescription or do you have to be really low to take it that long!
Vit D treatment: There are several regimens for increasing Vit D levels. One is 50, 000 units weekly for 6 weeks, and then rechecking the level. 12 weeks is a bit long, but if your original Vit D was very low, or if you have GI malabsorption, it may be needed. It is unlikely you'll get Vit D toxic after 12 weeks. ...Read more

Depends: If you have had your Vit D level tested, your doctor has probably given you some recommendations based on that. Encourage him to write prescription strength if your insurance pays for I (sometimes prescription strength, if generic, can be cheaper than over the counter too, even if you don't have insurance). Vitamin D3 & sun!: The best thing to take for low vit. D is vit. D but it's important to take the d3 form as the d2 form is dangerous! Most adults need 5-8, 000 iu/day to attain optimal levels, but in spring & summer you can also get it by spending time in the mid-day sun without sunscreen. If you don't get much sun then take d3 year-round. It's best to take 5-10, 000 iu of vit a & 1mg of vit k too-they work as a team. ...Read more

Bloodwork shows very low vitamin d. I take 2000 I u a day. She increased it another 1000 I u. Should I worry about the increase. What is normal?
Probably need more!:
Most adults need 5-8000 iu of d3 a day to achieve optimal blood levels of 50-80. But very low levels while on 2000 iu/day is unusual. I wonder if you are absorbing the type you take. Consider trying a different brand, take it with food, and increase to 5000/day. Now that spring is here you can also get d from sun exposure.

As more has been learned about vitamin D and it's effects on the whole body that was raised to 30 or 32 depending on the lab. Vitamin D was low 17nmol/l.I took vit D supplement 10, 000 IU for 2month it become 156 nmol/l. should I take supplement always?! or stop¡
Depends on sun exp.:
156 nmol/l = 62 ng/ml which is just where you want it (optimal levels are 50-80). But if you stop the levels will likely decline, so it seems wise to continue 10, 000 iu/day. The only other way to get significant amounts of D is via exposure to mid-day sun without use of sun screen. If you don't get sun, then it is wise to continue supplementation.
