Hmmm....: Even marine mammals like dolphins and whales having sex in the ocean don't get pregnant without an ejaculation into a vagina. We humans have little chance at all, if the dolphins and whales can't do it. If still worried, one can do a home urine pregnancy test 3 weeks after sex, or 1 week after missing a period. ...Read more

Walking: Walking is great any time of year, unless you have a specific pulmonary issue with the heat and humidity. It is good to vary your exercise and workout routine to use different muscle groups. ...Read more

If : If you have recurrent or persistent pain at the site of a previous stress fracture, you definitely have to worry that you either have a stress fracture that never completely healed or a recurrent stress fracture. It sounds like you are well aware of risk factors for stress fractures (ie, diet, weight loss, shoes, biomechanical factors). However, in order to know what sort of treatment or intervention is warranted now, you need to know exactly what's going on in the bone. My recommendation would be to see a specialist. If you have physical findings that suggest a stress fracture (like point bony tenderness), i would look at getting a thin section ct scan. This can differentiate an acute stress fracture from a non-union or fibrous union of a chronic stress fracture. The findings will tell you if this is likely to heal with rest or, if something more involved may need to be done such as a bone stimulator or even surgical treatment (like bone grafting or inserting a steel rod in the tibia). The findings will tell you if there are other host factors that may be operative (like nutritional or hormonal factors) or if there is some biomechanical, training, and/or equipment issue that needs further investigation. Good luck! ...Read more

LOW BACK MUSCLE PAIN: Is very common. Reading your history, not surprising. The low back muscles are commonly ignored when we work out, and over time poorly used. They have been probably extra strained trying to balance your excess weight. Overworked, poorly trained muscles will in time cause you stiffness and pain. ...Read more

I've been training for a half marathon & running races for six months now. I am in my first trimester of pregnancy. Is it safe to continue to train & run the half, or is it too risky in the first trimester? Thank you in advance!

I've been training for a half marathon & running races for six months now. I am in my first trimester of pregnancy. Is it safe to continue to train & run the half, or is it too risky in the first trimester? Thank you in advance!

Ask OB MD: I have club mates who have run very close to their delivery dates. Much depends upon how you feel and your level of fitness. Always consider if the training / racing will deprive your developing child of oxygen and nutrients. 90 - 120 minutes of relatively intense exercise may present just such a situation. Plenty of other races, but only one developing child. Perhaps volunteer to help out. ...Read more

Blood sugar 185 right after a basketball game in which temper ran hot near end of game. Is that normal? Levels were fine before & an hour after game

Rise in BS: During exercise it is common to raise blood sugars esp with increased tempers. If this is volatile going up and down, you can get an A!C non fasting at a later time to check on whether it stays high over time. See your MD if that occurs. Sometimes, all that is needed in basketball is to hydrate with water during and after the games. ...Read more
