Recovering from diverticulitis attack still have to be on low fiber diet but at the same time afraid of constipation what can I do?

Diverticulitis: Hello and Welcome to HealthTap,
I would suggest continuing the high fiber diet, increasing water intake to 6-8 glasses of water (if no contraindication). Use Metamucil on daily basis & walk or exercise if possible. Try avoiding foods with seeds to avoid inflammation of the diverticuli, once your acute phase is over you would benefit from colonoscopy at least 6 weeks after the episode.

My boyfriend was diagnosed with diverticulitis 7 years ago and he has been taking multiple fiber pills daily. Should I be worried?

He is doing well: Diverticulitis is an acute infection in the out-pouching areas of the affected colon. Diverticulosis (outpouching w/o infection) is more common with age and only some people suffer diverticulitis. Keep the bowel function regular and use of fiber certainly is beneficial. He may never get it again, or it could happen next week. Keep healthy, follow up with doc regularly. Good luck. ...Read more

Jan feb and mar 3 bouts of diverticulitis. High fiber diet daily. Help! It's ruining my life? When is surgery required??? Please advise

Persistent: Sounds like the diverticulitis has never fully healed. You may want to consider surgical therapy now to treat this once and for all. It's important to realize however, that one of the uncommon complications of surgery is the need for a temporary ostomy. While this risk is very low, it's not zero. See a colorectal specialist for a consultation. Hope this helps! ...Read more

I've had diverticulitis for 3 weeks low fiber diet and 3 rounds of antibiotics only little improvement taking lots of fluids any other suggestions?

Is diagnosis correct: I have taken care of patients with diverticulitis in their 30's but is uncommon. Was diagnosis made with CT scan? The usual protocol is to confirm diagnosis with CT if not pregnant and treat with appropriate antibiotics and low residue diet. If no improvement either change oral antibiotics or go into hospital for IV antibiotics and gut rest. Repeat scan 10-14 days if still no improvement ...Read more

Fiber + fluid: In order to avoid hard stools after starting an increase in fiber intake, increase water intake as well. Chronic passage of large hard stools can produce anal fissures and hemorroids, but it is not uncommon to pass a larger soft stool when initiating a higher fiber diet. ...Read more

I have been told I gace diverticulosis some dr say low fiber and some high fiber diet. What is best to control pain?

High fiber diet best: Diverticulosis of the colon is thought to be caused by a relative lack of fiber in the diet- specifically insoluble fiber, the kind that's in bran, or psyllium supplements. There is evidence that a high fiber diet decreases episodes of abdominal pain in those with diverticulosis. Remember that fiber and fluid work together, so also drink more water as you add more fiber to your diet. ...Read more

I'm on a low fibre diet for a few weeks after a diverticulitis attack still have running poo is this ok. I still on antibiotics?

Yes: It is ok.

You colon is still reacting and recovering from inflammation. This is a common finding.

Things, however, to be careful for. It should not be worsening. No fevers/chills. If the runny stool is pure water, that is concerning. If it is so much that it can dehydrate you, that is concerning.

Overall, if it is not slowly improving, see your doctor. If worse at any point, see your doctor. ...Read more

Are there specialized diets that will treat acute attacks of diverticulitis?

Not really, but...: Acute diverticulitis is associated with swelling of the colon that may create a temporary partial blockage of the colon. Therefore, we often advocate no food or just liquids during the initial phase of treatment. When food is resumed, it is common to recommend a low-residue diet early on. After the inflammation resolves, we often recommend high-fiber diets, which may reduce the risk of recurrence. ...Read more
