When Should Umbilical Stump Fall Off
When should the umbilical cord stump fall off? My baby is 15 days old and it's still firmly attached. I'm starting to worry it won't ever fall off.
Keep it clean & dry: Keeping your baby's umbilical stump clean and dry will facilitate healing, drying, and the eventual "falling off" of your baby's cord. Keep the area around the stump clean by only using warm water and washcloth when needed. Keep it dry by only sponge bathing until the cord falls off and folding your baby's diaper below the stump. Rubbing alcohol is not necessary. ...Read moreSee 3 more doctor answers

Some writers site a possible problem with white blood cell function in these kids. Discuss with your dr. ...Read more

Some people do: Once the cord stump dries up and falls off, it's harmless and some people do keep it for a memento. What to keep in a baby box or album is a very personal decision, and also varies with culture. But dried cord stump poses no risk of carrying infections or anything bad. Also, the dried cord stump has no potential future medical use (banking cord blood is totally different process). ...Read more

My newborn is a week and 6 days old and her umbilical cord stump fell off but at the bottom still looks open is this normal?
Call your peds: Sometimes, the umbilicus (belly button) doesn't fully heal at the base of the cord, so when the cord falls off, the baby can have something called an umbilical granuoloma - basically a non-healing wound. It's relatively common, and takes just 1 or 2 visits to the pediatrician's office to get it fixed. Make sure your infant is still eating, peeing, seeming as per her usual, 13-day self. ...Read more

Second child (son) born on New Year's Day. Umbilical cord starting to fall off and has a white ooze coming out and smells bad. No redness. This ok?
Needs attention: If baby is feeding well and there is no redness, I would suggest starting with gently lifting the cord remnant and cleansing the cord where it attaches to the body with rubbing alcohol on a q-tip now and again in several hours. Keep the area dry by folding the diaper down. If it continues to ooze, I strongly recommend that your infant be checked by his doctor who is better able to assess infect. ...Read more

Umbilical cord: A newborn's umbilical cord falls off anywhere between 1 and 3 weeks. Keeping it dry is the key for it falling off sooner. I recommend using a q-tip dipped in rubbing alcohol to clean just the area where the cord attaches to the skin during diaper changers and fold the diaper top down toward the skin to keep urine from getting the cord wet. Have you pediatrician look at it at the 2 week check. ...Read more
