My throat is very sore & swollen. It's difficult to talk, swallow, breath normally. A clinic 2 days ago told me I do not have strep throat.

Dr. Can recheck: If having difficulty talking, swallowing, and breathing, one should have the doctor recheck the throat. A doctor assumes his patient will call back or come back whenever symptoms get a lot worse, because a doctor doesn't know what is happening to a patient when the patient is at home. The 5-minute throat swab tests for strep throat are pretty accurate, but that means only about 90% accuracy. ...Read more

What will the ER do if you swollow glass but can still talk but it hurts to breath and swollow?

What will the ER do if you swollow glass but can still talk but it hurts to breath and swollow?

Examine you!: The er will look into your mouth and if they cannot see anything will have either a general surgeon or ear/nose/throat specialist come and use an 'endoscope' (flexible tube with a mocroscopic lense at the end) to allow them to visualize your throat. Glass is difficult to see and sometimes special radiographs may be needed to find it. ...Read more

Time to see doctor: A young, healthy person who then gets such symptoms should be evaluated to see what is causing the problem. The person can write down his symptoms and take the information to his primary care doctor... such as when the symptoms began, what makes them worse or better, what happens when lying down, any liquid coming up at night, any history of stomach reflux, etc... ...Read more

Dr. Needs to check: Shortness of breath is not normal, unless it is the mild, temporary shortness of breath with sports activities (but even then, one must be sure he is not having more shortness of breath than his sports peers have). Possible causes for SOB include tonsillar abscess, airway swelling, heart attack or arrhythmia, fluid around the heart, fluid around or in the lungs, asthma, chestwall tightness, etc... ...Read more

Food in lungs? I had a hard time swallowing a piece of steak. I couldn't breath for a short time, but then got the steak down. It hurt going down, and my chest (sternum area) continues to hurt. Is it possible that this meat went into my lungs? I was ab

No: No I do not think that you inhaled that piece of steak into your lungs. You would have smothered and probably died. More likely the piece of steak ws swallowed and went into your stomach. The chest pain is referred pain from your esophagus which you irritated trying to swallow the piece of meat. Things will be ok with a little time. If you develope more difficulty swallowing please see your physician, as it may be a sign of an esophageal stricture. ...Read more

I took a cranberry pill that I'm worried went down the wrong pipe. I didn't gag when I swallowed but it felt odd and I keep tasting it when I breath.?

Follow-up: It is possible to get aspiration pneumonia if the food passes into your lungs. If you feel uncomfortable and symptoms persist or worsen I suggest a routine exam at a clinic or office to be on the safe side. A clinician can listen to your lungs and order X-rays of your lungs. I wish you well with your health and I am available for a virtual consult with you about this or other health matters. ...Read more

? Airways problem: Airway hyper-responsiveness, or twitchy airways can be the cause, in other words some sort of asthma. Acid reflux, overweight, physical activity + other triggers can induce symptoms in susceptible patients. Possibility...: Is this happening as you are falling asleep and/or as you are waking up? If so, this could be happening because you are waking up during REM sleep paralysis. Pain in my throat when I take a deep breath or swallow. Lower throat than sore throat pain is normally. No pain swallowing if I tilt my head down.

Throat discomfort: Sounds like your discomfort is positional. Being that the neck is flexible, with the head tilted back, the throat narrows/compresses & can cause the symptoms. When in normal position, the throat opens back up and the symptoms resolve. If they happen in normal position & associated with fevers, nasal congestion, coughing, post-nasal drip, see your doc for further evaluation and treatment. ...Read more

You may need supplemental oxygen as well as IV antibiotics so you should go to the nearest er asap. Let us know how you do! Good luck! ...Read more

Smoker on nicoderm; hard to breath sudden sharp chest pains if I swallow both sitting or reclining; all day my throat/sternum down to diaphragm sting.

See your doctor: You want to make sure that you are not experiencing symptoms of too much nicoderm (nicotine patch). So, it's best to go to your primary care physician, and have s/he look closer at what is causing your symptoms, and be able to monitor you closely. The last thing you want is to have gerd, or an ulcer developing. So, do not delay, and get the help you need. ...Read more
