Ankles are swelling legs, pitting in legs, has been going on for some time now. I am 57 years old women. No serious illness in past. I am not on any medications birth control, I have no medical insurance unemployment has ran out 9 months ago.
Generally speaking, swelling in one foot/leg is usually due to something locally going on in the foot or leg, whereas swelling in both feet/legs is usually a symptom of the body retaining fluid. It shows up in the lower legs and feet due to gravity, but the problem isn't in the lower legs or feet, it's higher up.
In very general, broad terms, water retention is usually due to one of 4 things, or combination thereof: heart, lungs, liver or kidneys. A physical examination by a physician together with blood tests and perhaps a chest x-ray would help determine which of those things is responsible for your body to be retaining fluid. Some of the causes can be serious, so it's important you get yourself checked out.
An er cannot refuse you if you have no insurance or means to pay, but all an er will do is stabilize you and send you on your way, or, if it's serious, admit you.
Many clinics have sliding scale fees predicated on your income, so you might want to check that out as a viable alternative to a private physician. Either way, you really need to get checked.
Hope this helps. Feel better. ...Read more

To be expected: Lack of movement can increase the chance of swelling in the legs, especially when sitting. Standing and walking periodically can help prevent this. Long periods of sitting, like in a plane, increase the risk of blood clots in the legs also. Another reason to get up and move, so muscle activity can help move blood and lymph through your system. ...Read more
Is there ever a time where prolonged swelling of lower leg and no definitive diagnosis requires making an incision to find the cause of the swelling?
Evaluation to determine the source of the swelling, may include sonogram, CT scan of the abdomen and pelvis. I can think of a reason why an incision would be necessary to determine the source, unless there is a suspicion of a tumor causing the swelling.
I would recommend use of a compression stocking during daily activities to treat the swelling issue. ...Read more

44 year-old female with a history of DVT and stroke; on Warfarin daily now with right leg swelling and bilateral leg pain.....?
Need good ultrasound study and a cardiac echo: Was there a reason found for the stroke? A clot in the leg may travel to the lung, but should not normally be able to get to the brain. The most likely reason it did is a defect in the heart. An echocardiogram will help sort the heart out, and can guide a repair. A good ultrasound of the legs is necessary to see if there is a recurrent clot. If not, another consideration is Post-Thrombotic Syndrome - failure o the valves in the leg veins from scarring after DVT. Patients with DVT need to wear compression hose daily for at least 2 yrs after DVT to minimize the risk of PTS. ...Read more
