Pain there could be from a number of reasons. Take some nsaids and see the response. But you must see your pcp urgently.

Rib issue: If its at the bottom of your sternum - where all the ribs join - you are most likely feeling the xiphoid process - a small bone (can feel rounded) at the base of the sternum - its normal but sometimes sensitive to pressure being applied to it. Most likely cause: To consider is a rib fracture. Since you don't share any further details in regards to him or his complaints it becomes difficult to make any further comments. If its a rib fracture the treatment is symptomatic meaning you treat the pain and the fracture gets better with time.
