I need to stop snoring I have a problem with snoring, I have tried the following...I only drink water after dinner, I don't smoke before bed, and I am currently using the nasal strips but my relationship with my girlfriend is falling apart because I snore
Snoring, though frequently associated with sleep apnea, is not always amenable to treatment by an oral appliance. Snoring is frequently due to elongation of the soft palate (roof of mouth) or due to the loss of tone of this tissue. Most treatments are aimed at shortening or stiffing the soft palate.
Oral appliances are usually designed to position the lower jaw forward to open the lower airway and typically do not address the tissues of the roof of the mouth.
An assessment by a obstructive sleep apnea team should be performed to rule out the presence of sleep apnea which sometimes is associated with snoring. These teams are usually affiliated with a regional medical center / hospital. They will perform a history and physical to determine if there are any medical / pharmacological causes for your symptoms. You will be asked to undergo a sleep study to determine the presence of sleep apnea and to determine its severity and to further rule out causes. An apnea / hypopnea index will be determined.
Depending upon the severity of the sleep apnea you will be offered treatment solutions by this team. Usually a trial of CPAP is encouraged. Occasionally an oral appliance or surgery may be recommended.
There are many types of oral sleep apnea appliances, each having their proponents. Typically, if an oral appliance is required, it is custom fabricated by either a dentist or oral and maxillofacial surgeon. You should seek care from a dentist / oral and maxillofacial surgeon who is board certified by their respective specialties and has an affiliation with your sleep apnea team. ...Read more

Is it allergies or is it a cold? I can never tell, so is it ok to take Claritin (loratadine) whenever my nose runs?
Allergy vs. "colds": Allergic reactions are more likely to involve itching, especially in the eyes. Itchy watery eyes in combination with nasal congestion or "runny" nose is likely to be caused by an allergy. Tracking pollen counts may be useful for observing possible cause and effect relationships with allergy symtoms. If a fever or body aches is present with nasal symptoms think 'not allergy". ...Read more
I use oxygen only at night. Will it cause my nose to run the next day? I have noticed my nose runs the next morning like I have a cold.
Talk to your MD: If you were prescribed nighttime oxygen it is very important to use it. Oxygen can be delivered by nasal cannula or "blow by" and tends to dry out the mucous membranes in your nose, for which a humidifier can sometimes be useful. Please communicate with the Dr. That prescribed your oxygen if you have any concerns. Clear secretions may indicate you do have a cold- hopefully a mild cold. Good luck. ...Read more

My nose runs constantly actually runs down into mouth and when I bend over it drips out Allergy meds have done nothing. Help?
Consider not allergy: Non-allergic rhinitis is seen in the clinic all the time. Assuming no history of head trauma (can cause spinal fluid leak - I've seen this!), a 61yo w/ perennial watery, clear nasal discharge, worse with wind, meals (gustatory rhinitis), cold dry air often is non-allergic. Get skin allergy tested; ask to try nasal antihistamine (Astelin) or nasal anticholinergic (Atrovent). Might just do the trick ...Read more
Recently started feeling off balance. Usually no sinus problems but started getting headaches from it yesterday, my nose runs constantly. Light fever.
It's natural: This is a form of vasomotor rhinitis and a high percentage of people suffer from it. It's more of a nuisance than a disease, but for many people it can be mildly debilitating.
