Probiotics: No it is not bad, although most probiotics are bacteria which are sensitive to the antibiotic being used and will therefore be killed along with the intestinal flora. There are some probiotics, like Saccharomyces boulardi, which will survive antibiotic exposure. Caution must be used if the patient is immunosuppressed, because there have been reports of sepsis due to the bacteria in probiotics. ...Read more

Perhaps, But ......: Since anti=against + bio=life + tic=thing are poisons, killing or suppressing whatever organisms are susceptible/sensitive to them, helpful or harmful, then your idea makes good sense. Unfortunately, large comparative clinical trials to help define/refine relative success vs. Failure are lacking, thus your own personal clinical trial(s) and guesses are the dominant evidence. ...Read more
Hello should i take probiotics whilst taking antibiotics, and how should i space the time between between taking them.
Depends how U use it: Erythromycin is best not on an empty stomach, and probiotics usually go well with right before you eat. So, you could space them apart. You may want to take double or triple the probiotic dose while you're on the antibiotics as it will wipe out your natural gut flora. And you should take it daily anyways on an ongoing basis, but at lower amounts just for gut health. ...Read more
How long after taking antibiotics should one take probiotics, and what number billion bacteria count is suggested?
No one knows but...: No one can answer with certainty but an analysis of 63 research studies show an impressive 42% reduction in diarrhea secondary to antibiotics, a very common problem. However, these studies used different strains & doses. If i took a probiotic while taking antibiotics like Flagyl will it decrease my risk or stop me from getting a yeast infection after i'm done ?
YES: Yes, that is one of the main reasons to take probiotics. I advise all my patients take probioitics both during and after antibiotic therapy and feel every doctor should do so as well; it is irresponsible to not do so! along with acidophilus and bifidus it is wise to take sacchromyces boulardii, a probiotic yeast proven to reduce the incidence of antibiotic-associated diarrhea. ...Read more
Possibly: depends on type antibiotic, diet, underlying medical conditions, etc. More important than actual overgrowth is likely type (e.g., gas or toxin-formers) or diversity of bacteria, which can be altered greatly w antibiotics. How many billion CFU does a probiotic need to be effective when taking antibiotics? What about general maitenance? I see anywhere from 1.5 to 30 Bill
Billions: Most probiotics have bilions of CFUs per pill or capsule by the company's report. The problem is quality control. Only live bacteria provide any potential benefit and it is difficult to know from one product to the next how many of the purported bacteria are actually alive. More importantly it is what bacteria than the actual number that is important. Few controlled studies. ...Read more
