Once the bone is healed completely, then you can talk with your doctor about possible removal of hardware. ...Read more

Varies: It does vary in part on surgeons preference and also the nature of the bone and fracture involved. When the screw is removed, there is a hollow bone tunnel left where the screw was that slowly fills in with bone. In some situations, this can act as a stress riser to create a new fracture and that is the usual rationale for protecting some patients with a cast after screw removal. How long until the plates & screws in elbow to fix monteggia fracture can be removed? Need another surgery?
Why take them out?: The plates and screws use to fix your fracture rarely need to be removed and can be a difficult procedure. Once the fracture is healed, the hardware is no longer needed. If the hardware causes a problem, it can be removed. I would wait 1- 2 yrs before electively removing the hardware. Activity restrictions are needed after surgery for a limited time. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

How do orthopedic surgeons insert external pins into a fractured wrist? It is a colles fracture that needed surgery. Do they need to drill into bone?
Power drill: Sounds like you are describing an external fixator.Threaded pins are placed w/ a power drill( generally 2 placed in 2nd metacarpal and 2 placed in radius bone proximal to the fracture). The pins are connected to clamps which hold the fixator rods .The clamps and rods can hold the fracture in good alignment by 'traction' and "ligamentotaxis". Plating is an alternative to ex. The : The timing makes all the difference. As a fracture is healing, it lays down abundant new bone, called callus. Over time, the bone will remodel and the bump will go down. The callus usually forms within a couple of months, but can take over a year to remodel. If the bump came on suddenly and was associated with severe pain, then you may have a hardware failure. If the bone doesn't heal, the metal will fatigue, sort of like bending a paperclip until it breaks. Once the bone heals, it absorbs the forces around the metal and repairs itself. I would talk to your surgeon and have the area evaluated and x-rayed. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
