I am going for a lumbar discectomy 3 weeks after having a steroid epidural for back pain. Is this ok or shall i leave the epidural.?
Right hand left hand: 1st i'd make sure both your surgeon and pain physician both know what the other doctor is doing. That always leads to best outcome. An epidural can be done before discotomy however if you're sure your having the surgery i'm not sure an epidural prior to would be of great use. Possibly: However, you should continue to see your spine surgeon regularly until at least 6 months post op and inform her or him of these symptoms. It is possible you are having a nerve impingement syndrome or muscle spasm. It should be fully evaluated, thus an MRI or EMG may be in order. Depends: Laser discectomy is helpful for small disc bulges that are "contained" protrusions. Meaning the disc fragment has not extended into the canal. Make sure you have tried pt, nsaids, etc. First. Also, make sure your spine surgeon is experienced with lasers. Laser is "over marketed"! although it's less invasive, faster recovery, there may be a high recurrence which would require a second surgery. ...Read more
