Wheezing With No Other Symptoms
I cough before bed and in my sleep. It happens in episodes and it sounds like I am choking. There is no wheezing and no other symptoms. What is wrong?
Several things: You need to see a physician. You may have allergies that are exacerbated when you are in a reclined position to sleep or you may have mild acid reflux which becomes evident when reclined. If allergies, you could try nasal irrigation with a netti pot and mild salt solution (per the instructions) this may remove enough allergins from your sinus to reduce this problem. ...Read more
It's been suggested - not confirmed - that I may have Gastritis. I have mild SOB/wheezing-breathing, BUT with NO other symptoms. Think it's related?
Not necessarily: If your wheezing is periodic and associated while sleeping it could be related to aspiration symptoms associated with reflux esophagitis. However wheezing as a symptom can be due to cardiac or pulmonary issues as well. My suggestion would be to follow up with a doctor who can determine the etiology of your shortness of breath and wheezing. ...Read more

It it normal to have a bit of a wheeze when you forcefully exhale rapidly? Or is this a symptom of asthma?
Not usually: Hypothyroidism can be associated with goiter, an enlarged thyroid. Usually breathing is not affected, but in extreme cases, one could imagine pressure could be put on the airway - technically this is not called wheezing, but stridor, and is an emergency. The term wheezing is used to describe noises in the chest, not the upper airway. ...Read more

If it persists or gets worse, get checked out by your primary care doc. ...Read more
Have had a non-productive cough off and on for about 2 weeks. Not better or worse, and no other symptoms. Not wheezing. What should I do?
See doctor...: This could be a sign of bronchospasm which can be treated with bronchodilator inhalers. Some people have coughing instead of wheezing as a sign of bronchospasm. Other possibilities for your cough include post-nasal drip, GERD, bronchitis, etc. The only way to get diagnosed and treated is to see your doctor. You have been coughing long enough!!! Good luck!!! ...Read more
Possibly...: Sometimes patients w/asthma cough and don't wheeze. To determine if you have this, your doctor could send you for pulmonary function testing and, if normal, you could inhale a chemical that will induce bronchospasm if you are sensitive. If this is positive, your cough is likely due to bronchospasm and treatment can be given. ...Read more

Immediate exam: Use saline nasal saline drops from the drug store and a vaporizer for your child. Help to gently clear the discharge with tissue. Also, I suggest an immediate exam at a clinic.
