what is wheezing?

Physical sign

Wheezing
A symptom is what a patient describes. A sign is what a doctor finds. Sometimes they can be the same thing. A wheeze is a sign that indicates spasm or tightening of airways. This makes it hard to breathe out. So the patient has to force the air out. The velocity increases and causes a musical tone that can be heard with a stethoscope. It happens with asthma, emphysema, and other COPD.

Dr. Andrew Oswari answered:

what causes wheezing?

Bronchial spasm

Wheezing
Your airway is made of tubes called bronchi. The smaller tubes at the ends are called bronchioles. They are lined with muscles that can constrict (squeeze) or dilate (expand). Anything that makes the bronchioles constrict (infection, allergies, etc.) will make you wheeze.

what is inspiratory wheezing?

Severe wheezing

Open-uri20120729-31529-8uuefy
Wheezing is typically heard on expiration - when breathing out. Inspiratory wheezing - wheezing when breathing in - usually occurs with severe asthma. Another sound heard on inspiration is called stridor. Stridor sounds like crowing and indicates obstruction around the vocal cords. Severe airway obstruction in croup or laryngospasm generates stridor. Wheezing occurs further down in the bronchi.

See a doctor who can do a PFT (Pulmonary function test) . Possibly your PCP, or an Allergist or Pulmonary specialist can make an accurate diagnosis based on this testing.
