What's A Mass On Your Lungs Mean
Not always: But it should be evaluated. Depending on it size and appearance, your doc may be more or less inclined to get a biopsy. I'm assuming he/she will if it is a "mass" and not a "tiny nodule" but not much more can be said with the info provided. Make sure you see your family doc and he/she will decide on the next step. If you smoke, this is the time to quit. ...Read more
Deoxygenated blood enters the lungs from the right side of the heart and travels to the lungs. When you inspire, oxygen flows into the lungs, transverses the capilliares and attaches to hemoglobin down a gradient. At the same time, co2 diffuses into the capilaries and is expelled with exhalation. Oxygen rich blood then flows to the left side of the heart and into the ...Read more

Chest ex ray says lungs show increased interstitial markings with no active infiltrate, mass or effusion. What does that mean?
Depends on context: The interstitium of the lung refers to the area in and around the blood vessels and alveoli (air sacs). This is where the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide takes place. Inflammation and scarring of the interstitium disrupts this tissues. So the radiologist is noting that there appears to be increased markings in the area. There are many different conditions and disease that cause this pattern. ...Read more
Lung plural mass. Is that mean it's on the lung surface or part on the mass on the lung and the other part inside the lung. ..thank you?
Pleural mass: A PLEURAL mass means that something of a tumorous nature involves the LINING of the lungs. The mass is BASED in the pleura. It could be extended into the lung. If there was an: Original lung cancer, and a cancer found in a bone (calcaneus = heel bone), and now a "nodule" with "peripheral enhancement" some place, it is somewhat likely that it is a metastatic deposit from the original lung caner. Does inflammatory vs malignancy in the remarks of CT scan of lungs with 203cc solid mass mean its cancer?
No: No. It is at times difficult to differentiate inflammation/infection from a malignancy on ct. Pet/ct may more helpful where there is suspicion. However, this may also limited in differentiating infection/ inflammation from cancer. That being said, imaging does not arrive at a pathological diagnosis. When possible, any suspicion of lung cancer requires pathological confirmation through a biopsy. ...Read more
Doc found a painless mass on my thyroid - what could this mean? I also have painful lymph nodes in chest, head, groin areas. Please advise. Thank you.
Thyroid: This is difficult to answer without a more thorough exam and studies. The thyroid mass is likley a nodule. Whether it is benign or not, I cannot say. The lymph nodes should be examined and followed and if needed, biopsied. Sorry I cannot give more information without examination and workup. ...Read more
Breast MRI of non mass is 4.7cm✖️6.1cm AP✖️3.9cm big. Have small breasts does this mean chest wall invasion? Would MRI show that? If cancer
It doesn't mean: There is chest wall invasion (MRI would show it), and it doesn't mean you have cancer. Depending on other MR features, and assuming no mammogram, ultrasound, or palpable abnormalities, non mass enhancement is most likely to be benign. It may need biopsy, however, due to the small chance of malignancy. ...Read more
2 to 2.5 inches.: The word "mass" is typically used to describe a solid growth. One that is 6 cm would measure approximately 2 to 2.5 inches in size. The color, consistency and borders of the mass would be different depending upon the make up of the mass (infectious/inflammatory process versus benign tumor versus malignant tumor). ...Read more
Pneumonia itself does not usually appear as a mass on an xray. However, those that have a mass in their lungs, can develop an infection on top of that so it can definitely appear that way. It is always best to have a repeat chest x ray after you have been treated for pneumonia to make sure there is no underlying mass.
Take care! ...Read more

Ask pulmonologist: A lung mass is always of concern. Sometimes it can be determined to be benign simply by comparing xrays or CT scans over time. Often it must be biopsied. If possible, this is done through a scope passed down the windpipe. Sometimes that won't reach and biopsy must be done through the chest wall, guided by CT scan. In special cases biopsy is done with a scope through the chest wall or surgically. ...Read more
Many: Fungi like candida, blastomyces, coccidioidomycoses or paracocci can all cause infiltrates or processes that look like masses. Tb itself can cause a mass-like effect of tuberculoma and even pneumonia can cause mass like infiltrates and a scar later that involutes to look like a mass. Parasites do too. So we have to rely on symptoms, risks and the work up to make diagnoses. ...Read more
Infection, Cancer, +: Infection, hemorrhage, tumors (benign and malignant (cancerous)) fluid and even fibrosis can have a similar appearance. If it is mostly calcified, it is likely benign, old infection called a granuloma. Comparison to older scans can help determine if it has grown. The concern is whether or not it is cancer. Recommend seeing a primary care provider, perhaps a pulmonologist consult and pet/ct. ...Read more

Spiculated lung mass: Could be serious. It is likely that 3 months would not affect anything ultimately but the timing of the biopsy should be up to the physician managing the case. It is not likely to disappear but could stay the same. ...Read more

3.3 cm mass on husband's left lung. Not there a year ago, at all. Referred for biopsy. Should we be worried? 59 y/o, long time smoker.
Worry yes: But give up no. If this is an isolated lesion and is bad, he may need to have it removed and maybe other treatment. Thankfully he has a yearly CXR to watch for this very problem. Hopefully the biopsy is soon. All the best to your husband and your family. Some lung lesions are OK. ...Read more

See an expert: If you have copd, and fibrosis and a lung mass, you have three very serious, and separate problems. "mass" implies something over 3 cm in size and is likely to be lung cancer, or at least should be evaluated until proven otherwise.
