Does amitriptyline calm down overactive nerves when used for pain ?

Does amitriptyline calm down overactive nerves when used for pain ?

It is good to think that it reduces or calms the pain response by acting on nerves. It is not a pain medicine for all uses however. It would not be useful for a broken arm or sprained ankle. ...Read more

Don't use Endep (amitriptyline) now!: There are things you can do until this clears, but talk w/ your doctor about alternatives if it doesn't clear soon. Endep (amitriptyline) will NOT kill a UTI. I get headaches everyday, have for around 2 years. Currently on amitriptyline, don't seem to be working but hospital can't find anything wrong, help!

Chronic migraine: Almost certainly you have migraines, the most common cause of chronic headaches with a normal exam. Amitriptyline is one preventative, perhaps another agent would work better. If you are taking an otc pain med or something like fiorcet, you may have rebound/medication overuse headaches. You need a good acute agent (ie a triptan ie imitrex). You also should get regular sleep and exercise. ...Read more

Do the drugs olanzapine, Zoloft (sertraline) and elavil work on the parasympathetic nervous system to calm you down ?
