What do black spots that appear on an MRI of the brain mean?

What do black spots that appear on an MRI of the brain mean?

It depends....: How white, grey or black signal on an MRI scan is interpreted depends on the type of sequence that spot appears in. So without knowing the sequence, i can only guess. If these are scattered black dots they could represent small foci of old hemorrhage or iron deposition. If it is a bigger spot it could represent a fluid collection. I really would have to see the images to give you an answer. ...Read more

We don't know: You are probably referring to non-specific white matter lesions seen on MRI of your brain. We actually do not have a clear understanding of what these or what they mean. They are loosely associated with stroke and dementia. However, at 38 years of age I would not think your white spots are cause of your symptoms and am surprised you have them. They could be serious. Please get them checked out. ...Read more

Many things: It depends on where the "white spots" were seen and how they were sure that she was alzeimer's free (did they do a brain biopsy?). While fibromyalgia is a central pain disorder (disorder of the brain), it is not associated with any pathological tissue disorder, but rather persistent sensations of pain in the brain (cause unknown). ...Read more

My daughter just had an MRI with 3 small nonspecific white spots on the brain. But no other syms of ms. She had numbness in legs but was due to hern.Disc shown on lower MRI ?

Nonspecific: Small bright spots are frequently seen on MRI of the brain, increasing with age. Sometimes there are features that are suggestive of demyelinating disease (ms), but otherwise they are usually considered nonspecific. Anything that affects the tiny blood vessels in the brain can cause these bright spots (e.g., migraines, diabetes, hypertension, vasculitis). See a neurologist if you are worried. ...Read more

Not necessarily: If you have history of migraine, head injury, high blood pressure or merely taking a variety of meds, could be better answer (eg, microvascular angioplasty). Ms is best diagnosed based on history and physical exam. The MRI is used for confirmation and treatment decisions in part. Get neurological consultation. ...Read more

Depends on Rx: Disease modifying agents in MS are designed to control relapses, MRI lesions, and prevent ultimate disability.
