What does a mildly positive rheumatoid factor test indicate if the doctor thinks you don't have arthritis?

What does a mildly positive rheumatoid factor test indicate if the doctor thinks you don't have arthritis?

There are nearly 5%: There are nearly 5% of the population with a positive rf, but only 1% has ra. Therefore 80% of rf that are positive are "false positives." most are very low in titer. Less common causes for rf positivity include sjogren's syndrome, sarcoid, and others, but these are much less common. ...Read more

Does a full blood count test identify Sickle Cell Disease, or do you have to have a specific blood test to be diagnosed?

Does a full blood count test identify Sickle Cell Disease, or do you have to have a specific blood test to be diagnosed?

Why do you ask?: If the smear is viewed and reported, and the physician reads the full report, you'll be told whether you have sickle cell disease. The trait requires some special testing. Classic sickle cell disease is not subtle, but there are variant hemoglobins related to the classic disease that are more subtle, and may be missed until adulthood. Gene testing's best for these. Best wishes. ...Read more

How would you know if you have cancer? Is there any signs? Would a blood test show if you hsve cancer?

How would you know if you have cancer? Is there any signs? Would a blood test show if you hsve cancer?

No: Cancer is not one disease, but there are multiple types of cancers that affect multiple organs. There is no blood test for a generic diagnosis of cancer. The signs and symptoms of different cancers vary and there is no pathognomnic sign or symptom either. For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Drink enough water daily, so that your urine is mostly colorless. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. Practice safe sex, if you have sex. ...Read more

Does a false positive ELISA HIV test mean someone has a autoimmune disease? Or could it be anything? Do people find out why they get these results?

Does a false positive ELISA HIV test mean someone has a autoimmune disease? Or could it be anything? Do people find out why they get these results?

No: While false positives can be from nothing specific, they can be related to infections from other viruses that may make similar antibodies that can react with elisas, but this has to be confirmed with western blot. I personally would ask for two confirmations as it can take up to six weeks for viral levels to be high enough to be sure with the test. Check with infectious disease doc to be safe. ...Read more
