What will happen if you end up eating some triclosan?

Probably nothing: There are no reports of human poisoning from ingestion of triclosan. Triclosan is reportedly harmful to algae & causes reproductive & developmental abnormalities in certain fish. There is a report of liver & kidney injury in rats. If you use one of the many toothpastes containing triclosan then you are already swallowing a little bit of this broad-spectrum antibiotic. ...Read more

Not to worry: Washing your hands with soap will do you far more good than any theoretical harm from Triclosan in the soap. You may use a regular soap, those are just as effective.

Should I be avoiding products with triclosan?

Not necessarily: Soap is effective at removing and killing bacteria when an adequate amount of scrubbing or rubbing is used. You should rub your hand together at least as long as it takes to sing the abcs (abacavir) or the happy birthday song to ensure that you have adequately cleaned your hands. For most uses antibacterial chemicals like triclosan are not needed and may increase bacterial resistance to anti-infectives. ...Read more

How does triclosan work to kill germs?

How does triclosan work to kill germs?

Depends: Triclosan works by interfering with a bacteria's ability to build cell membranes (basically the skin of the germ). At low concentrations triclosan is bacteriostatic meaning it prevents bacteria from increasing in number. At higher concentrations triclosan kills bacteria. The use of triclosan at low concentrations may permit the emergence of pathogenic germs resistant to its effects. ...Read more

Can't be certain: Carcinogens are constantly being identified...unfortunately the risky concentration/exposure can be hard to identify. Have you stopped eating meat off the grill? Do you only drink distilled water? I personally use a similar product, drink tap water and eat occasional grilled steaks- I think you are safe enough. Don't swallow the toothpaste! Use your toothpaste: Please forgive my frankness. The "pop" claims about "endocrine disruption" haven't attracted the attention of mainstream science as they claims seem extremely weak to most of us. In fact, it's ironic to see a fearmonger with a junk-journal article complaining about this sort of thing while eating a tofu sandwich -- loaded with phytoestrogens. Does triclosan cause odontogenic tumors, or would it not be in toothpaste if it did? I have an odontoma. Used face wash for yrs with triclosan. Likely?

Does triclosan cause odontogenic tumors, or would it not be in toothpaste if it did? I have an odontoma. Used face wash for yrs with triclosan. Likely?

Possible: Triclosan has been shown experimentally, and in lab animals to have an association with certain cancers, particularly breast cancer. This is because it is a xeroestrogen, a chemical that mimics the effects of estrogen. the most recent summary of evidence in humans, however, is inconclusive. Because odontoma are not generally estrogen-sensitive, it is unlikely that your tumor is related. ...Read more

Triclosan: Triclosan is an anti-bacterial ingredient found in a variety of soaps. Should people, esp women, keep using face wash, toothpaste, etc that has triclosan? What about those who have used them for yrs? High risk for breast ca?

No!: Triclosan isn't an essential ingredient in many products. While triclosan added to toothpaste has been shown to help prevent gingivitis, there's no evidence that antibacterial soaps and body washes containing triclosan provide any extra benefits, according to the Food and Drug Administration.

Stop worrying: Trislosan is a widely-used, apparently harmless chemical that degrades after being discarded into a form of dioxan that is not one of the forms that has toxicity or is supposed to be linked to cancer. Any chemical can be "shown to be harmful for this-and-that" if used in artificial conditions in labs. I am sorry that anyone troubled you over this. ...Read more
