Could you treat a porn addiction?

Could you treat a porn addiction?

Yes: Most men get bored with this goofy stuff quickly. If you're missing out on the better things in life because of a focus on erotica, it's treatable. It'll be a combination of talking about what it means, and perhaps some medication. Mayo's reported Naltrexone stopping addiction cold, and i've heard of low doses of ssri's working. Get your freedom back by accepting treatment. Best wishes. ...Read more

Would a doctor classify it as an addiction if you do something to escape or for a release?

Would a doctor classify it as an addiction if you do something to escape or for a release?

Addiction: I agree with dr. Fowler. In the diagnostic & statistical manual, "addiction" isn't used. But it equates to a severe "substance use" d/o, with both tolerance (using more & more of the substance or behavior to get the same effect) and withdrawal (physical symptoms when the substance/behavior is stopped). Also, pursuing the substance/behavior despite harm to health & the rest of one's life, etc. ...Read more

Doc, I have a masturbation addiction that is interfering with my life. I can't function without it. Is not masturbating unhealthy? Appreciate it!

Unhealthy side...: Any activity that interferes in important functions (work/play) and/or creates distress is unhealthy. There are plenty of health benefits though. However, it can interfere and certainly is not a good replacement for intimacy with a partner. When done compulsively you can actually physically harm yourself. Aim for moderation. Track it, try to slowly reduce frequency, celebrate any progress! ...Read more

Hi doctor! I hv been masturbating since I ws 16 and I m not able to stop my addiction. I hv attempted a lot to avoid dis but hv always resulted in failre?

Masturbation is not: An addiction. It is completely normal. I am however aware that there are some religions that view it as sinful, unclean, or undesirable. If you have conflicted feelings about it and you are not an adherent of one of those religions, then I would recommend you see a sex therapist to talk about it. If it is forbidden by your religion, then I recommend that you seek council with one of your religious advisers. Perhaps they have some ideas that could help. Best wishes. ...Read more

Pain killer addiction--isnt it the doctors fault?

Pain killer addiction--isnt it the doctors fault?

Debatable: I do think that docs take some responsibility when they are the source of the medication, but they cannot be the sole blame. Pain is the hardest condition to treat since anyone can claim they are in pain. A comprehensive evaluation and exam can help identify patients at risk for addiction. Ultimately it is the patient that takes the medication. The doc cannot force them to use them. ...Read more

Doctors, what are the side effects of a dilaudid addiction?

Side effects??: They aren't really effects on the side, but what the drug does. Any opioid can cause physical dependency, and the main "side effect" of a Dilaudid (or heroin, or oxycodone) dependency is that if you don't have it, you go into withdrawal, which can be severe, with nausea/vomiting/diarrhea, muscle pain, anxiety, insomnia. Detox you safely: Ambien (zolpidem) addiction can be very dangerous. If tapering doesn't work, a formal detox is needed. Ambien (zolpidem) detox is similar to alcohol or other sedative detox.
