For what reasons might a doctor order an abdominal ultrasound after seeing a transvaginal ultrasound?

Guesses: I could guess many things, such as partial visualization of a structure, vascular engorgement (pelvic congestion) that may be caused by compression of proximal vessels, or a negative pelvic ultrasound that was done for symptoms that can be caused by abdominal structures. Ultrasound dating: First trimester ultrasound is accurate within 5-7 days. There is no test that can date conception more accurately than a 1 week window. While ultrasounds can be limited in obese people, as long as they can visualize fetus, measurements will be accurate. Transvaginal ultrasounds can be more accurate but more invasive. Getting a more accurate date is unnecessary; babies rarely respect due date! ...Read more

A lot: Ultrasound evaluates the liver, gallbladder, spleen, aorta, inferior vena cava, kidneys and pancreas. It can detect fluid in the abdomen and often will demonstrate enlarged lymph nodes. What organs are covered under an abdominal ultrasound?

What organs are covered under an abdominal ultrasound?

Solid Organs: An ultrasound of the abdomen is an excellent way of looking at solid-(liver, kidney, uterus, ovaries, spleen) and fluid-filled (gallbladder) organs; "not so much" for hollow ones such as the intestine. A ct scan often provides complimentary and/or corroborating information and is better for some solid organs (pancreas). ...Read more
