What To Expect In Stage 4 Cancer
Still treatable: There are many chemo options available. If it is stage 4 by virtue of minimal liver involvement-there is good medical data to talk with a liver surgeon to discuss removal of that portion of the liver. If there are other spots of tumor spread in the body, then chemotherapy and hormone suppression therapy are the mainstays of treatment. Focal radiation can help bone pain. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
What can we expect from a stage 4 lung cancer patient with bone metastases- what can be done in case all treatments are ruled out?
Biomarkers in lungCA: For stage 4 non-small cell lung cancer -- specifically adenocarincoma -- i would check the biomarkers alk and egfr. The response rate with oral drugs for those targets is ~80% vs. 20% with chemo. Bone mets can be treated with bisphosphonate (zometa) or Denosumab (xgeva). Palliative care provided early has a survival benefit. Ref: temel et al. Nejm http://www.Nejm.Org/doi/pdf/10.1056/nejmoa1000678. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Quite variable: Stage IV cancer generally means that the cancer has spread from its organ of origin to other organs. How long you have to live depends on where the cancer originated. For example, stage IV breast or colon cancer is much more easily treated than stage IV pancreatic or gallbladder cancer. So you need additional information to fully answer your question. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
What is the best way to get nutrition into someone (the best foods or types of foods) with stage 4 cancer with very little appetite?
Be wise: Ask guidance from your physician about the big picture. If there is a mechanical barrier to eating (esophageal or throat cancer, or bowel obstruction), feeding may not be possible. At the end of life, many people do not wish to eat. It's likely your loved one will be gone soon, and perhaps sharing time, warmth & love together is more important than "getting nutrition into" them. Best wishes. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Not necessarily: Stage 4 cancer is a late stage cancer which has spread inside the body. But the survival is quite varied and it depends on which type of cancer it is. For many cancers we have good treatments and patients can live for several months to several years. Cancers like colon, breast and kidney can be controlled for 2-5 years even in stage 4. Others can be fatal over a period of few months. ...Read more

What do you suggest if my wife has survived stage 4 cancer is there any organization that will do something for her?
Need more info: First of all, her doctor is a good source of information. The American Cancer Society has a great website with resources, help, and support. Without knowing more about what kind of cancer she had, how long ago, what kind of treatment she was given, and what her most recent exams and scans show, it's hard to know what advice to give you. I also am not sure what "something" you want done for her? ...Read more
Hard to Know: Many healthy people get cancer. Stage IV just means that the cancer has spread around the body away from where it started (metastases). Some cancers spread around the body very early and the tumor where it started might be small and asymptomatic by the time that the metastases are detected. Fast growing cancers probably start 2-6 mo before diagnosis. Slow ones probably take a few years. ...Read more
