Possible causes are middle ear infection, ear canal infection (swimmer's ear), trauma, fluid behind the ear drum from a cold, viral infection or allergies or referred pain from the jaw, throat or neck. Should see a doctor: Redness, pain, or swelling the the region above and behind the ear can possibly represent an infection which can be serious if it is allowed to spread.
