I sprained my index finger five days ago, but I can't fully bend it. Do I need X-Rays or will it just heal naturally? How do I know if it is broken?

Sprain finger: If you injured it five days ago, and still cant fully bend it, it sounds like you should get an xray to see if it is fractured. If it is fractured and you let it heal naturally, could end up crooked or with decreased function. ...Read more

See ORS: Sprains of the finger joints are common and can cause persistent swelling esp. For months after an injury. See an ors for evaluation and x-rays to make sure there is no old fracture, etc. Pip joint sprains can 'last' a long time but generally improve up to a year after injury. Daughters wrist swollen for 2 wks 3 days Drs said its sprain then hand & fingers swelled 2 days ago. Is this still a sprain? There's popping too.

Trauma or not?: If your daughter is 14 or less and there has been trauma, then a fracture of the wrist is much more likely than a sprain. A follow-up x-ray can be helpful in seeing a fracture at times when the first x-ray is normal. In the absence of trauma, other diagnoses must be considered such as infection or an autoimmune condition. ...Read more

Injury: It depends partly on the type of injury and how severe it is. A mild sprain takes about 1 to 2 weeks to heal. Fractures can take weeks to months to heal.
It also depends on the person. Healthy children usually heal very quickly. Older adults or adults with other medical problems can take much longer to heal.

Got hurt by a volleyball. Feeling like sprain in left hand fingers. I don't have a fracture though. What should I do?

A sprain can be mild: Moderate or severe. If there is laxity in the joint then at times surgery is needed. If the joint is stable often splinting in the proper position temporarliy to reduce swelling followed by buddy taping for protection and gentle return of mtion will help. Persistant swelling or stiffness should prompt a reevaluation but it can take time (months) even for a simple minimal avulsion or sprain. ...Read more

I hit my right pinky finger on a table yesterday afternoon now it's swollen, tender and looks deformed is it broken or sprained?

Suspect broken: Though I think the deformity is suggestive of fracture, if you did not experience severe pain fracture seems less likely. Finger: It could be a finger sprain. It's not clear how it was injured. Did something fall on it or did you fall or did something else happen? When did it happen? If it was less than a week ago, then this could normal healing. It could also be something else such as a fracture. So it depends on how and when this injury occurred. X-rays would help determine if there has been a fracture. ...Read more
