Depends: There are multiple causes of rectal bleeding with the most common being hemorrhoids. Other causes can include colon polyps and colon tumors. Confirming that the blood is from the rectum (and not vagina), i would definitely recommend consideration for referral for colonoscopy for further evaluation. Likely Thrombosed: From your description it sounds like you may have a thrombosed hemorrhoid. These can be treated with analgesics, sitz bath, stool softeners and sometimes topical steroids. If pain is severe then surgery is quite effective at quick relief. Given your age you should see your doctor for definite diagnosis. You should have had a colonoscopy at age 50. ...Read more

Born with them: It may be that whatever caused your bleeding 2 1/2 years ago wasn't internal hemorrhoids or that you made good changes to lifestyle, diet or bowel behaviors at that time so that you no longer have hemorrhoidal bleeding.
