What To Do For Swollen Ankles After Knee Surgery
Why is my ankle still swollen 5 weeks after knee surgery? There's no pain in the leg or ankle, and I'm up and walking just fine.
Knee surgery may be done for congenital, traumatic or degenerative causes. Arthroscopy is a common method for treating cartilage and ligament problems. Open surgeries are commonly performed for fractures. Knee joint replacement may be done in (usually) older individuals with knee joint arthritis that impairs their daily function and which is not ...Read more
I had athroscopic knee surgery, ACL recons. And meniscus 5days ago. Ankle is now swollen and bruised, I believe hematoma. It is very painful. Danger?
Hematoma: Following acl surgery especially if your own (autologous) bone patellar tendon bone graft is taken swelling, bruising in the ankle is not uncommon. Just make sure that you are not having any sharp calf pain where a doppler ultrasound would be helpful to be performed to rule out a blood clot. ...Read more
DVT: Your foot is probably swollen from the trauma of knee surgery, but it can be swollen from a blood clot in your leg, which can be extremely dangerous. Deep venous thrombus can have formed in one of the deep veins in your leg causing the swelling in your foot. Knee surgery puts you at a very high risk for this. It can be very dangerous as this can progress to a pulmonary embolism. So get checked out. ...Read more
I had arthoscopic knee surgery 4 weeks ago and my ankles are swollen. Is this normal? What should I do?
Be seen: I would certainly let your surgeon know. The most common cause if it involves both sides is that you have retained fluid still from your surgery. While you are having surgery you get IV fluids that can third space into your soft tissues and gradually resolves. But other causes such as heart or kidney failure, medication reaction, or blood clot are possible. So make sure your surgeon is aware. ...Read more

I had knee surgery to replace remove some broken hardware (bone staple) a month ago and my upper leg is still quite swollen - thigh and glute.?
See your surgeon.: Hardware removal can certainly be traumatic to the involved extremity, but to have significant swelling above the surgical site such as the hip and buttock may represent more than simple post-operative swelling. I would recommend follow-up evaluation with your surgeon to ensure there is no sign of infection or DVT (deep venous thrombosis). Better to be safe than sorry! See your surgeon. ...Read more

Can having a swollen ankle give you knee pain? I had knee surgery 3 yrs ago and my ankle swells up now so I wondered if that's why my knee still hurts.
I had knee surgery about a year ago and since then I have had to wear a knee brace every day my knee hurts all the time and my calf stays swollen up?
See details.: This is obviously not a normal result from what I assume to be arthroscopic surgery. You should not still need a brace and should not be in pain. Calf swelling can be secondary to phlebitis or the rupture of a popliteal cyst among other causes. Get a 2nd opinion. I would strongly recommend a new MRI if you have not recently had one done. ...Read more
My husband had knee surgery 5 days ago. He has fluid under his knee cap. Tonight, the other leg/ankle is swelling badly. Should he be seen at ER?
No info about husband's age, medical problems, type of surgery, etc. The fluid under knee cap is probably not of concern UNLESS the skin over it has become red, hot, swollen, and very tender, or if fever.
The OTHER leg being swollen is more concerning. If he has any calf or leg tenderness on that side, please go to ER right away to make sure no blood clot. Good luck! ...Read more
