Is a pinched nerve in the neck at C5 C6 a serious condition? Is a pinched nerve like cervical radiculopathy? Please help

Outcome varies: If there is compression of one of the nerve roots it is sometimes equivalent to a "pinched nerve". This type of physical compression of a nerve root can result in a radiculopathy. The outcome is variable. Sometimes over a period of days - weeks the radiculopathy will spontaneously improve. If you start noticing difficulty in pinching (weakness) of your thumb and index finger then check with MD. ...Read more

Nerve (Definition)

The brain and spinal cord communicates with what is occurring in the internal organs and limbs by nerve fibers where are like electrical wires with insulation (myelin) and the "copper" (axon). Within brain and spinal cord these nerves connect to other nerves via synapses on both axons and dendrites. A nerve can carry information regarding sensations, and ...Read more

What to take for a pinched nerve in my neck/shoulder?

What to take for a pinched nerve in my neck/shoulder?

Exercise and aspirin: Of course the answer may be different if the nerve is truly pinched & is either in the shoulder or in the neck. The best treatments for mechanical problems, like pinched nerve, are mechanical. Symptomatic relief with anti-inflammatories may reduce pain but more importantly allow corrective exercise to be used to lessen symptoms. Find out what caused your trouble, then do something about it. ...Read more

I have a pinched nerve in my upper back neck and shoulder right side what should I do?

You need evaluation: You can try heat or ice. If it hurts to move your shoulder it could be a problem there. If it's bad enough, see your pcp or a spine physiatrist. There are a number of treatments short of surgery, such as physical therapy, chiropractic manipulations, and injections. If these fail, surgery may be indicated in which case seek the care of a fellowship-trained orthopaedic spine surgeon or neurosurgeon. ...Read more

Since last month I've had a sharp pain in my neck, shoulder, & arm all on the right side. Wondering if it could possibly be a tear or pinched nerve?

Neck, arm pain: This question is not appropriate as it is patient specific. Having stated that, yes cervical nerves do travel to the neck and upper extremity and can get "pinched". There can be many other causes of sharp pain, some of which need looking into. The exact distribution of pain is very important to direct further diagnostic tests such as MRI. ...Read more

Nerve impingement: These symptoms most likely arise in your neck/cervical spine. It can also arise from your brain from something like a stroke but this is less likely if the face is not involved. Nerve impingement should not be taken lightly. Any neurologic deficits such as these should be evaluated by a physician promptly. If you develop any functional loss or weakness that would represent an emergency. ...Read more

Severe neck-shoulder-arm pain (r side) (throbbing/pulsating/sharp stabbing). 2 months) X-ray done (normal). Doctor thinks pinched nerve. Relief laying?

Maybe: This one is hard to say without examining your shoulder as it can be hard to distinguish pain arising from shoulder conditions such as impingement or rotator cuff tendonitis from neck conditions such as bulging disc. Need to be examined to truly discern where the problem is from. Xrays can be normal in either condition. ...Read more

I would not hesitate to be seen to discuss options. ...Read more

Sharp pain in my left shoulder blade. Neck pain radiates behind my ear. Shoulder pain and soreness. And little arm soreness as well. Pinched nerve?

Discuss with MD: You have a lot going on for your age, please discuss this with your doctor, you may warrant some further testing. This is not a good forum for this question as we can not diagnose "pinched nerve" without examination and testing. Your doctor may order a nerve conduction test coupled with an emg, or an MRI if they have not done so already. Discuss with your doctor. ...Read more

Neuro said I had severe pinched nerves in neck or "cervical radiculopathy" he said this is cause of my very mild swallowing and breathing issues true?

Insufficient data: Does "neuro" mean neurologist or neurosurgeon? Why did you meekly accept the answer but then post here? Ask doc to explain the neuroanatomy: EXACTLY what cervical levels, roots &/or nerves are affected & which ones involve breathing & which swallowing. Ask to review test results (MRI, CT, myelogram or EMG/NCS). Finally, if no treatment is recommended, I suggest seeking another opinion. ...Read more

Can cervical radiculopathy cause pain in shoulder, arm, side of chest and sometimes hand? But no neck pain? Most pain is inner arm. Mostly when I move.

Strange but true: Cervical radiculopathy occasionally can be present without the presence of significant neck pain. That is a little odd when we see it and for that reason deserves to be looked at in detail to make sure something else may not be causing neurological symptoms such as a mass lesion, nutritional deficiency, etc. Emg studies often help answer this question as well. A good neurologist can help with this. ...Read more

My left shoulder arm and neck and head always hurts to where I can't use my arm itt feels like my veins in  my arm are gonna burst is it a pinchenerve?

Maybe: There are many possible causes for these symptoms. If your primary care physician is iunsure of the diagnosis after a good history and physical, you should be evaluated by a neurologist or physiatrist. Nerves can become pinched anywhere from the neck, through the shoulder, and down the arm. Blood vessels in this region can also become entrapped.
