What To Do For Infant With Gas And Crying
We have a month old infant who is gassy. We do our best to aggresively make him burp but within an hour after feed, he gets up crying from gas pain. Are there any other remedies?
Some possibilities: Babies swallow air- when they eat, suck or cry. During feedings, try to burp him in between every ounce, or between nursing on each side. Hold him upright (on your shoulder) for 15-20 minutes after feedings to help allow the air to rise up and escape, and not get trapped under the milk. Try a lactose free formula. Try simethicone (gas drops for infants). Check with your doctor if this continues. ...Read more

By the date of this post about 4 days has gone by, so hopefully you have made contact with the doctor and your baby is better by now. For the future, and for others reading this post, if your baby seems very irritable and uncomfortable, and your instinct tells you that something is wrong you should contact your doctor. A phone call to the doctor's office after hours will put you through to a nurse or on call doctor. They will ask you a series of questions and advise you on the next best course of action (er visit or next day doctor's appointment).
Take good care. ...Read more

My baby is crying excessively. I am still breast feeding. Her dad is allergic to shrimp, and I ate shrimp 2 days ago. Please tell me what to do. Gas.?
Dr sear's diet: I agree elimination diet is important if you are nursing and your baby is fussy/colic without any other problem (ie fever, poor feeding, etc) if you need a reference google "dr sears elimination diet". Focus mostly on foods mentioned to be avoided. If you hadn't had problems until you ate shrimp, then avoiding shellfish is all u need to do. ...Read more
Our 4 week old baby is crying excessively and is in alot of pain due to stomach cramps and gas. When is it necessary to go to the ER? We only have Gripe water at hand and its not helping.
Gassy tummy: All babies get gassy tummies! In order to grow, babies take in 100 kcal for each kilogram they weigh! This is a lot of hard work on their digestive system. (imagine digesting 7000 calories per day........You would be gassy too!) babies have immature gastrointestinal tracts too. Digestion, and gassiness, often get much better between 4-6 weeks of age. ...Read more
Simethicone: Over the counter simethicone drops (mylicon or infant gas drops). Are perfectly safe. The dose is 0.3 ml every 3 hrs as needed. If you are breast feeding take a look at your diet. My 4 month old baby gets histerical once I put his infant carrier in the car. He won't stop crying turning blue and shaking. What should I do?
Keep him safe in car: At four months he is too young for a real temper tantrum. While he may get agitated by the car seat's restrictive environment, his safety in the car is paramount for him to be transported in any other way in the car. You may want to have someone else sit beside him not to make him so lonely. ...Read more
It's OK to let cry.: If there is no other reason for the crying that needs to be treated, then it is definitely ok, and actually recommended to let him cry. You are the parent, and your child needs to learn at an early age that he cannot manipulate you. Trust me, you will be much happier in the long run, and your child will be better able to adapt to different situations. ...Read more
Infant colic: Prevacid (lansoprazole) is not known to cause gas. It is used to reduce acid and thus treat reflux to prevent the esophagus from getting inflamed. It is normally given to children more than 1 years old but is commonly used for newborns. If you are right, I would suggest simply using half the dose for a day or so and see if the "gas" is gone. If not, stay on the Prevacid (lansoprazole) and change your infant's diet. ...Read more

They don't work.: Babies swallow air when crying & bottle-feeding. Till ~ 6 weeks, their intestinal smooth muscle does not coordinate propulsion of liquid & air. Use the "football hold". Put baby on your forearm, head at your elbow, face down. Press your palm against his tummy, flex his hips, encircle one leg with your fingers & roll him gently against your chest. Tilt head up to burp, tush up to pass gas. ...Read more

Can an infant become constipated if they are on similac sensitive? She was previously on similac advanced but had to switch because of gas/ diaharrea
You're kidding right: I've heard some interesting myths proposed by the anti-circumcision crowd, but this one is bizarre. The effect on infants does cause diminished activity and feeding aggressiveness for a few hours before it reverts to normal. There are no other behavioral effects of note. There is no evidence to support the myth. ...Read more
