Post nasal drip: Usually the sore throat with allergies is due to post-nasal drip irritating the throat. Getting better control of your allergies with nasal medication or, more effective still, allergen immunotherapy, would address the root cause. What can I do about persistent sore throat caused by, i think, post-nasal drip which i definitely have? I don't have a fever or cold.
Treat the drip..: Treating the cause/drip is the way to go... Currently, steroid nasal sprays are first-line treatment for nasal allergies. Antihistamines such as zyrtec/claritin/allegra/benadryl (available otc) may help, but steroid still the best. Often nasal allergies/congestion cause you to breath via mouth during sleep and thus inducing the sore throat. I suggest consulting your doc for eval/treat.
