What Testing Do I Need To Have In Order To Get Gleevec
C-kit analysis: Whether patients with gist are candidates for Gleevec (imatinib) depends on the status of a particular gene called c-kit, or cd117. This is a test that must be run on the tumor biopsy tissue and is generally coordinated with the help of the pathology laboratory. In select cases, some patients are candidates for Gleevec (imatinib) regardless of their c-kit results, but this is highly individualized. ...Read more

What should I do if I have to take gleevec (imatinib) for leukemia and its hard to work because it makes me so sick?
Call Oncologist: There are a large amount of information on different approaches to manage toxicity based upon the response of the cml. It is expected that people will live for decades with CML on treatment. There are dose changes and other agents to be considered. Don't stop the drug. Have a discussion with your oncologist about the options for you to be functional. ...Read more
No data yet...: Gleevec (imatinib) inhibits a number of tyrosine kinases in cells (c-kit, pdgfralpha, c-abl) . There is very recent data that Gleevec (imatinib) may have activity in retinoblastoma, but these experiments where done on isolated retinoblastoma cells grown in culture. There are no clinical trials showing that Gleevec (imatinib) can treat retinoblastoma. Future clinical trials may be planned to address this question. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Is treatment necessary for systemic mastocytosis? I am taking gleevec (imatinib). What would happen if i stopped taking it?
D/w oncologist: There are indolent systemic masto, and agressive systemic mastocytosis (asm). No: No. I don't think so. If you have a lump in the breast- you need a mammogram and sonogram to be done. If it is confirmed to be a solid mass- a biopsy should be done to figure out what the lump is. Breast lump has nothing to do with the gleevec (imatinib). Go see you md right away so mammo and sonogram of the breast can be done as soon as possible and biopsy should also be done accordingly. ...Read more

Hi all, could someone tell me if you can heal blood cancer disease with gleevec (imatinib) medicine?
What is the life expectancy of a man in good general health with cml x 6 years in remission with gleevec (imatinib) 400mgs po qd.?
Good: From the study, about 70-75% people are still being on Gleevec (imatinib) and still on complete remission for over 12 years now. In addition to gleevec, (imatinib) we have 3 other medications available- i.e. Dasatinib ( sprycel), nilotinib ( tasigna) and the newest one- bosutinib ( bosulif) that you can use if needed. So, i will say that for a leukemia, the life expectancy in CML is actually pretty good. ...Read more
