Why is my blood sugar higher in the morning than at bedtime?

Why is my blood sugar higher in the morning than at bedtime?

Great question.: Your glucose levels can be affected by your circadian (day/night) rhythm. When you are waking up, certain hormones are active to help your body get ready to get up. In diabetes, these hormones are accentuated in the morning, and they antagonize the effects of insulin. Therefore, more blood sugar enters the bloodstream from your liver at this time of day. ...Read more

Not enough info: Are you diabetic taking Insulin or something else? Do you have symptoms of hypoglycemia when you "tank" at a glu of 50-60? Why are you measuring your glucose? Have you had GI surgery, such as gastric bypass? You probably should be eating small frequent meals, including at bedtime, but more information is needed. See your doctor. ...Read more

I am in my twenties and slim-built. Should I eat late at night if I feel like my blood sugar is low?

I am in my twenties and slim-built. Should I eat late at night if I feel like my blood sugar is low?

Not necessarily: Better to be checked by your doc for hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) which sometimes precedes the development of diabetes & for overactive thyroid, which can be associated with low weight & rapid metabolism. If tests are all normal, try eating 6-8 mini-meals a day to prevent highly fluctuating blood glucose levels. ...Read more

High fasting glucose: Hi. Yes, that would be a high fasting glucose (upper limit of normal is 99). It should be repeated; if reproducible, you have impaired fasting glucose/prediabetes. Use serum glucose, not finger stick, for diagnosis. Healthy diet: whole grains, legumes, nuts, canola/olive oil, fruits & veggies, lean meat, nonfat dairy; minimize fast food, processed food, saturated fat, white flour, white rice, etc. ...Read more

I am a 69 year old hypertensive. Besides my regular medications, I was recently prescribed glycomet sr 1000 mg at night. My blood sugar was 90 in fasting and 130 in pp. Is this medication required?

Check with doctor: Glycomet (metformin) is for treatment of Insulin resistance, diabetes, non-alcoholic fatty liver, polycystic ovary syndrome, etc... As with any medication, the doctor and the patient have to balance the benefits of the medication against it's side effects (so, one must discuss this with the doctor). Metformin helps prevent the cardiovascular complications of diabetes, and somewhat lowers LDL & tg. ...Read more

Nocturnal glycosuria: If your blood sugar is high at night, and you are peeing more often as a result, you need better night time control of you diabetes - so an Insulin dosage adjustment will be needed. If you are not taking multiple injections a day, you may need to start splitting your dose or adding nph at bedtime. Talk to your doctor about how to handle. What should my blood glucose/ blood sugar be at?

70-99mg/dl fasting: Normal blood sugars are between 70-100mg/dl when you are in a fasting state (at least 8hrs). Diabetes is present when the number hits 126mg/dl in the fasting state. When the sugars fall in between these ranges (100-125), this would be considered impaired fasting glucose or pre-diabetes (borderline diabetes). ...Read more
