Depends: A formula widely accepted is 220-age=maximum heart rate. Keep in mind though that this is a simplistic formula with age as the only variable and standard deviation for this equation is 10 to 15 bpm. Target heart rates for aggressive cardioconditioning are generally recommended at 80% of your calculated maximum for a healthy individual. See your first GP to discuss any possible contraindications

So if you feel like you are overdoing it, are exhausted and feeling sick after your workout, and your hr was less than target, it was too much. Decrease intensity. If hr is higher than target, and you feel ok afterwards, that's ok, no problem.

First calculate: Your maximal heart rate by using 220-age if male and 207- (age x 0.88) if female. Then, during aerobic exercise, you will try to reach 60-70% of the mhr and stay for as much as you can. I always advise for a medical exam before starting any conditioning exercises. Have fun.

The heart rate you report would be considered reasonable, provided that your father is not having symptoms such as fatigue, lightheadedness, dizziness, chest discomfort, shortness of breath. If he is having symptoms (at rest or with exertion), then likely that rate would be "off target" for him, and a follow-up appointment with his cardiologist would be in order.

90- 153: Remember it is just a target heart rate to get to during exercise, and not a number to get fixated to as you can see this is quite a wide range maximum heart rate in 40 year old is 180. The benefit you get from exercise is not so specific at particular rate so do not worry to much about the rate just keep regular exercise schedule and follow it good luck.
