What physically happens when a person sleeps with their hands and arms tucked under them?

Nerve entrapment: If you sleep with arms and hands tucked under, that sleeping position can cause compression or entrapment of your ulnar nerve at the elbow, known as cubital tunnel syndrome, resulting in numbness in the small and ring fingers. The numbness is usually transient, but can become chronic if the nerve entrapment continues. ...Read more

As a massage therapist I get many who sleep upon their hands and arms who also have neuropathy. None of their doctors have asked them about it, why?

It can happen: Certainly one can get transient paresthesia from such an action but frank neuropathy would seem odd. When you sleep on your hand you are causing a decreased blood flow to the area. In an extreme case this can cause damage and possible neuropathy. I can't say as I have ever had a patient have neuropathy without extensive damage being done to the muscles or skin. ...Read more

When I sleep both of my arms and hands go numb I wake and stand up until the pain and numbness go away. What is my problem it happens when I work longer hours with chainsaw and other hand tools. What is the cause of this

Hand: Hand numbness that appears in sleep and with repetitive movements is commonly a symptom of carpal tunnel syndrome, a condition in which one of the 3 major nerves to the hand gets compressed in the wrist. This causes numbness in the thumb, index, and middle finger, and sometimes in part or all of the ring finger, but usually not the pinkie. Discomfort from carpal tunnel syndrome can be felt elsewhere in the upper limb, but if there is true numbness anywhere in the forearm or arm, this can indicate a different problem, such as damage to the nerve roots or plexuses (big nerve interchanges) in the neck and shoulder. There are two other major nerves that go down into the hands, the radial nerve and the ulnar nerve, that could also be involved depending on the pattern of the problem

it is a good idea to get hand problems checked by a primary care doctor, who can then refer to a neurologist if needed. Left undiagnosed and untreated, problems like hand numbness can become worse, or develop into weakness of the hands.

It often occurs during sleep, driving a car, typing, or talking on the phone. 45/f. Arm & hand pain while sleeping. Also wake up w/ arms tingling from arms falling asleep during night. Pain also wakes me up at night.?

Possible Carpal Tun: There are other possibilities, but the most likely cause for your symptoms is carpal tunnel syndrome. This is the result of compression of the median nerves at the wrists and it is common for people to wake up to "shake out the numbness." I would recommend that you see a neurologist, but while you are waiting you can ice the wrists, try otc ibuprofen, and buy carpal tunnel splints for nighttime. ...Read more
