Social anxiety: Everyone seems to have an opinion on this. All are based on a series of accounts. To be FDA approved for treatment of social anxiety disorder there is a fairly rigorous process a drug manufacturer has to go through. As it turns out several agents that did not apply for FDA indication work well in some individuals. I suggest you team up with somebody who will closely advise you personally over time ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Tried Zoloft and Viibryd (vilazodone hydrochloride) with some success. What would you recommend to treat generalized anxiety disorder? Found any particular SSRI/SNRI better?
I'm suffering from generalized anxiety disorder and have the occasional anxiety attack usually from work stress. Any ssris you'd recommend?
Yes, but...: Recommending a specific agent among the ssris or another group for you without an evaluation would be akin to recommending specific engine repairs without doing any diagnostics or even knowing what kind of engine it is. Medicine is nothing more than a tool that must be applied and used in a specific way tailored to fit your specific needs. Haphazardly applying a random tool may just worsen things. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Not for anxiety: Gabapentin, a relatively new anticonvulsant differs from most other anticonvulsants because it has minimal drug interaction potential and is not metabolized in humans. It is widely used for both paroxysmal and continuous neuropathic pain conditions, but not for the anxiety. Rec.: a psychiatrist consultation for further investigation and medication adjustment. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

How long should I expect to take an ssri (specifically, lexapro) for generalized anxiety disorder? I am engaged in counseling and other strategies.
Variable: Some people with generalized anxiety d/o continue supportive medications like Lexapro (escitalopram) indefinitely; others for more limited time depending on their work in psychotherapy and life practices. Lexapro (escitalopram) has good anti-anxiety effects, and is relatively safe in that it does not build tolerance like benzodiazepines & specific sleep medications do. Please discuss your personal situation w/your own doctor. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
What are some doctors go to SSRI for treating anxiety disorders? What do you usually try first? I have Remeron (mirtazapine) but not effective really. Thank you.
Safety: It's quite simple, actually, SSRI/SNRI's have been shown to be quite effective and are much safer than the alternative options. Personally, and this is my own personal preference, I tend to start with either a treatment that targets multiple neurotransmitters (such as Pristiq (desvenlafaxine) or Cymbalta) or a pure SSRI (like Lexapro). Hope that helps! ...Read more
In ones professional experience which of the anti-depressant SSRIs/SNRIs overall tend to work better for anxiety disorders with fewest side-effects.
In general: Lexapro, (escitalopram)Viibryd, Brintellix, but there's no pat answer because one person may do great on a med that someone else can't tolerate or finds useless--best indicator is if someone in your biological/genetic family is doing great on a drug chances are you will also ...Read more

I am a hypochondriac and also have Generalized Anxiety Disorder. Some days are good and sime are bad. I'm on medication for anxiety. Is it normal?
Why did a very bad experience with a recreational drug cause my anxiety disorder? I'm not a drug abuser, i tried it once. ( bad decision )
Not likely: It is not likely that using a drug once could cause your anxiety to last for an extended period of time. Lots of things can give people anxiety, especially if you are a high achiever. I think you can make an appointment with a psychologist to evaluate the problem and make suggestions would be good. Not all anxiety is bad, it just has to be managed and channeled. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
