More information: Much more information is necessary to be able to answer your question. 1) do you need the celexa (citalopram)? 2) is there a history of any ventricular arrhythmia or possible ventricular arrhythmia? For instance, have you ever had syncope (fainting)? 3) is there a family history of sudden cardiac death? 4) do they think you have long qt syndrome, or just a long qt interval on an ecg? I've been taking citalopram 40mg for over a year now can you advise the best way to stop taking the drug and will my stress come back?

D/c citalopram: Discuss this wish with your prescribing professional. Citalopram is generic Celexa (citalopram) and maximum recommended daily dose is 40mg. I assume you have the 40mg pill. They also have 20 ; 10mg pill. Do not just stop this med cold turkey. I like to decrease the dose in 4-6 week intervals by about 25% but I tend to be very conservative. 30, 20, 15, 10mg and if no sx I would d/c and follow 6-12wks. ...Read more

Hi this is Debra Walker and I wold love a second opinion on a drug cold citalopram I never have taken any drug for exciting. Thank U Debra Walker?

Citalopram: Debra, I have had very good results with this medication with my patients who use it for anxiety. It has very few side effects and those it does have go away quickly. It is important to know that it may take 3-6 weeks for it to start working and to give it time to work. It is also important to followup with your doctor as they have asked. Good luck, hope you feel better. ...Read more

I take celexa (citalopram) 40 mg, I was wondering how this drug reacts when your under sedation when your at the dentist. Or with novacane?

Dental anesthetic: Meds and the sedation meds normally used in dental settings are unlikely to cause a problem when used on patients taking celexa (citalopram). However, always inform your dentist about any and all medications you take prior to any dental treatment ; discus the literature regarding your question. In my practice I have not had any issues with using anesthetic ; sedation meds on patients taking anti-depressants. ...Read more

Can Citalopram or Propranolol cause any sensivity to diary products? I've been taking both the drugs since 2 years ago and it's a year I have bloating

Can Citalopram or Propranolol cause any sensivity to diary products? I've been taking both the drugs since 2 years ago and it's a year I have bloating

Highly doubtful: I am not aware of any association of those medications with dairy sensitivity.
The fact that you took them for a year without the bloating is pretty strong evidence against a link with the medications.
Our ability to digest lactose declines after childhood. You are at an age where lactose intolerance can become evident.
I suspect that the medications and the bloating are unrelated. ...Read more

Taking Zyprexa (olanzapine) to boost my Citalopram. Only been on 2.5mg for a month, now down to 1.25. how do I come off this drug (Zyprexa (olanzapine)) alltogether?

Low dose: Presumably you have found no benefit. 2.5 mg is a very low dose, perhaps too low to work. There are not withdrawal problems associated with this medicine. But it is curious that you are not asking your question of the prescribing doctor. You should be working with the prescribing doctor. ...Read more

I'm taking 20mg of citalopram once a day and bupropion sr 150mg once every morning, is it ok to cold turkey these drugs n if not how?

Cital no, buprop yes: Stopping either or both of these should be done in consultation with your prescribing doctor. There may be less drastic dose adjustments and alternative treatments to consider, etc. However, to answer your question, bupropion usually can be stopped cold turkey, while citalopram is best decreased gradually to avoid discontinuation (withdrawal) syndrome. ...Read more

My doctor put me on citalopram and I put on about 25 pounds in a matter of two months. I read that the drug can slow metabolism. How can I lose weight?

Eat less and do more: Citalopram is not known for weight gain being a common side effect. It is possible that you were eating less before and now that your condition is being treated with citalopram you are able to eat more. Or you were more active before and now less active. Some people crave sweets when taking ssri's like citalopram. The only proven way to lose weight is to take in fewer calories than you expend. ...Read more

Magnesium: Fatigue, anxiety, and tremor are all symptoms of magnesium deficiency. Calcium can block the uptake of magnesium. Poor stomach acid, low 25-oh vit d, chronic stress, caffeine use, and exposure to loud noise predispose to magnesium deficiency. Topical magnesium oil and green vegetables with supplemental taurine to enhance mag uptake, stress reduction, and gentle exercise can help. ...Read more

I've tried sertraline, then citalopram, now on mirtazapine and venlafaxine. Will these drugs ever work? Losing hope.

Add CBT therapy: For decades research has shown that optimal therapy outcomes require therapy - it enhances medication and for some is sufficient alone. The need to learn symptom mgmt skills cannot be met w/out it. Don't lose hope - it is also a major part of successful treatment. In fact, w/out confidence it is unusual for any treatment to be a success. So, find a therapist you trust and work at it! Best! ...Read more

My son (age 22) started citalopram 10 mg for depression. He attends college hours away from me. How can I monitor his reaction (especially suicidal thoughts) to the drug? He is detached, no zest.

Talk with him: You can talk with him daily, and make sure he continues to follow up with his psychiatrist. Student Health Services usually have psychiatrists who see patients regularly there; sometimes the college employs them, and sometimes they contract to work specific hours. Your son should also have a therapist to work with consistently, so that he comes through this. Encourage sticking with it. ...Read more
