Seriously- renal stones are the result of postive and negatively charged particles in urine binding together and precipitating as solids- most frequently as calcium- oxalate. This happens most often when the urine is concentrated- ie when you are dehydrated. And trying to pass these stones from the kidney to the bladder is incredibly painful. ...Read more

Not sure: I haven't come across any study that shows prevention of kidney stones with above. If you are having recurrent stones, will need to make sure that your serum calcium level is not high. Certain dietary changes can reduce kidney stones formation, including drinking 6 to 8 glasses of water a day at least, avoid sugary drinks and weight gain. Need workup: You need a metabolic stone work up including blood tests and a 24-hour urine collection. These will allow your urologist to determine if there is an underlying metabolic problem that may need to be treated with further diet changes or possibly medication.
