Agree: 5 mm nodule is very small to biopsy . Nodules less than 1 cm have no significant risk of cancer. You need to have thyroid ultrasound every year to check and measure size of this nodule ...Read more

You may be right ...: .. that the pain is near your thyroid. Or it may be something else in your neck. Thyroiditis, or inflammation of the thyroid, is the major cause of thyroid pain. Swelling can be another symptom. OR you may have some muscular pain. The only way to be sure is to see your doctor for an evaluation: history, palpation (physical exam) of your neck, possibly blood tests and ultrasound. Good wishes:) ...Read more

See your Physician: I can't see your picture but a swollen area on the neck that has been the a while should be evaluated further. Ultrasound would be one way to look to determine what is going on. LN/ tonsils: Where is the swelling? How did the thyroid look like on imaging? What are thyroid functions/antibodis? The LN could be from the tonsils. Are you having a sore throat? strep?mononucleosis? ear infection? allergies?
