What is snri and how does it work? What drugs are in this class? Is tramadol an snri? What is seratonin syndrome? Do these treat depression and pain?
SNRI: Snri = serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor. Effexor, pristiq, meridia, savella (milnacipran), (milnacipran) and Cymbalta are in this class. Tramadol is not. When serotonin and norepinephrine are not taken back up into the neuron, they are more available in the synaptic cleft between neurons. Cymbalta & savella (milnacipran) treat fibro pain; the others more for depression. Cymbalta can treat depression; savella (milnacipran) perhaps less so. ...Read more

How do TCAs actually work to control
non-migraine headaches? SSRIs aren't common for this, so is it the norepinephrine that is the agent helping?
Great question: Great question! Norepinephrine is definitely involved in the interpretation of pain signals in various areas of the brain. However, serotonin definitely has a role to play (eg, the triptan drugs for migraine work on a specific subtype of serotonin). So, in theory, it's thought that these components together synergistically act to alleviate headache. Hope that helps! ...Read more
Allergies to paracetamol, ibuprofen and tramadol, is there any other medication which could help to cure a common temperature/cold/menstrual cramps?
Not probable?: Good morning, allergy to three products, paracetamol, ibuprofen, and tramadol seems very unlikely. Often we label allergies to a product which is not true allergy. As allergist we find the majority of patients who come with history of allergy to penicillin are not allergic to penicillin. Paracetamol, ibuprofen, and tramadol do not have the same structure to have an allergy to all of them. ...Read more

What pain medications are available for a person that is allergic to tylenol (acetaminophen) and motrin?
It depends: The answer depends on the symptoms associated with the tylenol (acetaminophen) and if the Motrin reaction extends to other nsaids (aspirin etc). True allergy to Acetaminophen (tylenol (acetaminophen)) is unusual. If there is NSAID sensitivity, most can tolerate Celebrex (despite the warning) since being a cox-2 antagonist.
