What kind of doctor could you go to for a swollen joint in your thumb?

What kind of doctor could you go to for a swollen joint in your thumb?

Likely PCP / Ortho: As a family physician, I would say your primary care provider (pcp) would definately be a good place to start. From there, you may need to see any number of specialists, if your pcp is concerned. These may include an orthopedist, rheumatologist, or infectious disease specialist. However, it is likely most efficient to see your pcp to get an initial evaluation.

If at the CMC joint-: -of the thumb on the side adjacent 2 the index finger, an ulnar collateral ligament injury is the most common & many don't heal well, especially if not properly Dx'd & treated. Many need an MRI 2 access the position of the torn proximal end, as it can get trapped & unable 2 reattach without surgery.

My wrist is mildy swollen between bottom of thumb and wrist joint. What could be the condition and what would be treatment.

Arthritis or Tendon: This is likely to be either one of two things. Either basal joint arthritis of the thumb or dequervains tendonitis. There are other conditions but in the area you described these are the most common. Consult an experienced hand surgeon for help.

Need to see ortho: If your thumb is still painful and swollen then need to rule out fracture versus ligamentous injury. Will need to see orthopedic surgeon.

Finger pain: If you simply hit your finger against something but can bend it, and it was not high velocity with the injury, then likely not broken. Ice it and if not better in one week, then see Dr.

As: As dr. Wint notes, the dark color under the nail is like a bruise. When the nailbed (the area under the hard nail) gets injured, blood gets trapped under the nail. Depending on the amount of bleeding, the area may be large and start to elevate the nail. A very large area will cause the nail to fall off. There can be a broken bone (fracture is the same thing) under the nail. Most of these do not need treatment and heal well, even if they look exploded (comminuted), but should at least be x-rayed. If the fracture is big enough to involve the joint or distorts the bone too much (displaced), it may need further care, such as splinting or surgery. A particularly painful blood collection, called a subungal hematoma, is relatively common after a crush injury such as this. Many people will drain them to relieve the pressure and pain by burning a small hole in the fingernail. In the case of a broken bone, though, this increased the risk of infection, though the risk is still relatively small. There is also discussion about how much bruising to accept before repairing the nailbed. Some people argue that if the bruise is more than half the nail, it should be removed and the nailbed repaired. I disagree. I think the nail is the best "splint" for the nailbed and is best left in place to help mold the healing tissue.

I have petechia on my legs for a month now it getting worse I had blood 3 mths ago everything was fine except for a high acid level and swollen joint?

I have petechia on my legs for a month now it getting worse I had blood 3 mths ago everything was fine except for a high acid level and swollen joint?

See a dermatologist: Are you sure they are petechiae? There is no "high acid level". You need an exam by a DR who can identify the spots on your legs. "Swollen joint"? Red, hot, painful? Any edema? Vein problem? Have you been ill or taking any meds or other pills? You need attention to determine the nature of this. Vasculitis???

I have a blueish swollen lump on my thumb near the joint, I work and play at a computer, could it be related? How to I fix it?

Vascular tumor: The bluish lump is probably a tumor of the blood vessels. These are usually benign (not cancer). It is not related to use see a hand surgeon for a complete diagnosis.

I have a swollen, painful thumb that locks at the first joint. What should I do?

I have a swollen, painful thumb that locks at the first joint. What should I do?

Maybe an injection: The tendon helps your finger bend and is lined by a sheath. It sounds like to may have inflammation of the tendon sheath causing locking when you bend it. This is called a trigger finger. When a hand orthopedist or rheumatologist evaluates you, they may recommend a steroid injection to relieve it.

When they say an injured athlete had fluid drained from a swollen joint such as the knee, what is this fluid?

When they say an injured athlete had fluid drained from a swollen joint such as the knee, what is this fluid?

Synovial fluid: Usually this is synovial fluid. Synovial fluid's job is to lubricate and protect the joint. In the presence of injury, inflammation or infection, the synovial lining (part of the joint capsule), overcompensates by producing an excess amount of synovial fluid. Too much fluid can cause pain and tightness in the joint and restrict range of motion. With an acute injury, blood may also fill the joint.

I've had a swollen joint finger for about 6 months now, I've tried cold, voltaren and even diclofenac. Xrays shown nothing damaged?

A good doctor should: In his mind have a differential diagnosis of what could be wrong based on a good history and clinical exam. Sometimes, further diagnostic or blood testing needs to be done. Make sure you see a hand surgeon, in the case you are seeing an internist and he is not ale to help you.
